The New River Valley Heart Association Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m. Virginia Tech has been a long-time sponsor and supporter of the event.

The 1.5-mile walk (or 5K run) begins at Bisset Park, 49 Berkley Williams Drive, in Radford. Check-in time is 9:30.

Chris Kiwus, interim senior vice president and chief business officer, and Bryan Garey, vice president for Human Resources, are serving as Virginia Tech’s co-chairs for the walk.

“This is a key fundraiser to support heart research that benefits so many in our region and beyond,” said Garey. “Millions of dollars in research at Virginia Tech are sponsored by the American Heart Association. It’s a cause that is easy to support because many of us have been touched by heart disease, whether ourselves or a loved one.”

Individuals can join a team, or create a team from their department or friends. Each walker or team secures sponsors before the event.

“The New River Valley Heart Walk is a terrific way to get moving while socializing with friends, family, and co-workers,” said Kiwus. “Being part of the Heart Walk boosts your heart health and your mental health and helps thousands of others at the same time.”

Activities include a warm up, refreshments, team photos, and a pooch parade.

Information, team registration, and more are available at the Virginia Tech Heart Walk page. Questions may be directed to Hokie Wellness at hokiewellness@vt.edu.
