However, a Colorado-based startup called Overture has cracked the code with a zero-emissions supersonic plane. After debuting the concept version, the latest reveal of the revamped Overture has raised hopes that the supersonic jet is no longer a pipe dream. The recent failure of Aerion has shown how expensive the supersonic aircraft can be to develop, but Boom is ready for the first flight of the first production-ready aircraft in 2026. The aircraft will go into production in 2024 and will fly over water at Mach 1.7 at a range of 4,250 nautical miles with a capacity of 65 to 80 passengers. One of the biggest highlights is noise reduction with durability.
One of the biggest issues is the Concorde’s noise, with the Overture flying at Mach 1.7 on water and just under Mach 1 on land. In addition, the four-engine design reduces noise and uses the world’s first automatic noise reduction system during take-off – which prevents burns. Therefore, it also meets regulatory requirements for subsonic aircraft.
Other design changes include the Overture’s fuselage having a larger diameter to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency at high speeds. Just like on hypercars, carbon composite materials are used instead of steel, which promotes lightness and has greater thermal stability.
Of course, the aircraft uses 100% sustainable aviation fuel and has net zero carbon emissions.
With its fast speed, the Averture is the most practical supersonic jet in terms of getting more room inside and in large windows. It will also be luxury and not just based on speed. The desire to fly from New York to London in 3.5 hours is too tempting to pass up on a jet. So, as it moves toward reality, the boom overture could turn the aviation market upside down.
