The words “game-changing” and “leading-edge” are thrown around frequently in the tech world, and all too often they end up being slow. Recently, we introduced boutique gaming system maker Maingear, Laptop Mag Editor-in-Chief Sherry L. Smith, Operations Editor Peter Norman, and I to a new wireless power supply system that not only changes the game, but could revolutionize the way we use our homes and offices.
Our first introduction to Quaze technology happened when we visited with CEO Wallace Santos and Managing Director Ron Reed as they shared some of Maingear’s latest gaming systems and laptops. Charming showman that he is, Santos had one more trick up his sleeve. After being ushered into a back room office with a shiny white desk; He picked up what looked like a mason jar and placed it on the table and as his hand approached the table the LED lights in the jar magically lit up and he looked and smiled.
Santos and Reed revealed that Maingear has invested in a Canadian company called Quez, which is developing the future of wireless power delivery. Sherry, Peter, and I stood in silence as they discussed the applications at play, at the office, and at home. The future of wireless power is coming. Unlike Qi technology, you don’t need to connect to a small surface area. Instead, the entire surface can deliver power to multiple devices at once and has far more power than Qi can handle.
We were so impressed by this amazing technology that we immediately organized an exclusive full demo with members of the Quaz team at Maingear’s secret lab.
What is Quaze?
Back in 2014, Quaze Technologies was founded by Xavier Bidaut and Philippe Boulanger, both former rocket engineers and three-time winners of the international IREC rocket competition. So, yes, the Quaze team is clearly brilliant. And that being said, I’m a pretty smart guy, but if I tried to explain what Quaze is I’d be talking at you for hours, so I’ll simply quote what Ron Reid shared with me.

A true wireless future
In a demonstration given to us by Boulanger and Quaze CSO Roy, we watched them place a game controller on a Quaze-treated table. Five seconds later, it’s over with multiple lights while charging the iPhone, iPad, and RGB-lit mouse pad. The Quaze Wireless Power Surface can deliver up to 500W of continuous power to your devices. Imagine a world where your desktops, laptops, monitors, smartphones and tablets can be charged or recharged just by being in close proximity to the Quaze floor, without the need for messy and intrusive wires running all over the place. That’s what future Quaze and Maingear are trying to make a reality.
As I stood there, watching everything near the quay floor light up, light up and charge, I saw a future with less copper wire to build homes. Think about how much money you can save; It can change how homes are designed and built.
Think about it, Roy, Boulanger and Santos explained during the video interview, “So our technology is first-rate, as you said, because it turns any surface into a power source that can push as much electricity as you want. So we turn a wall, table or counter into a power source, moving things wirelessly and giving them all the power they need.
So if the walls in your house contain Quaze wireless power transmission technology, it eliminates the need for outlets. Your TV is mounted on the wall and automatically powers on, working safely without a nearby light source. Now imagine your kitchen floor containing Quaze wireless power delivery technology – the possibilities for home improvement are endless. Plus, it’s safer than outlets where little kids try to post stuff.
Technology can revolutionize the office. Instead of subfloors with outlets everywhere and every level of an office building containing miles of copper electrical wires for every outlet, you now have floors powered by Quaze. When I asked if Quaze’s technology could power your entire home and use less copper wire, Boulanger explained, “Well, eventually, we can control your entire home. But now we are working with tables. That will be our first approach. And then we’re working to touch your wall. You are your roof, your floors. Then yours will be one wired home, where everything works, wirelessly with our technology.
This is the future that Quaze and Maingear are working hard to bring to us next year, starting with the gaming platform. Without wires dangling everywhere, your desk or gaming workstation will look tight on camera while streaming.
Why I love Quaze.
The takeaway message during our interview was that neither Maingear nor Quaze want to patent the technology as many companies do. Why, you might ask? Because both companies believe it’s something Nikola Tesla himself believed in wholeheartedly. Technology belongs to the people to improve their lives and create a better future. That’s why, even if they had the opportunity to sell, they resisted the temptation.
When I asked if Quaz technology would be a proprietary technology for Maingear, Santos said, “No, the technology is too important for anyone to own.” Honestly, I think they are going to change the world, I mean it for sure.
Santos’ eyes lit up whenever he talked about getting this technology into people’s hands, homes and offices around the world. When we ask, how do you see this technology impacting mobile computing and how does it impact gamers? “Yeah, I mean, look at a game setup or a battle station, right? You can see the array of cables that go right to every device that’s plugged in. And then you look under the base desk and it’s basically a rat’s nest. As a gamer, you want your setup to look good, not just functional, right?
But, and that’s what we’re in business for: we’re making really cool, beautiful, high-performance computers. So it doesn’t end with the tower; It doesn’t end with a laptop. It’s a complete package.”
Boulanger and Roy explain why the technology is safe, saying, “So basically, even before we did the demonstration, we went through all the certification parameters to make sure it was safe. It is already known how radio waves interact with the human body, and we have passed all these measurements. It’s safe even from a cell phone. And because we don’t want our technology to be just for toys, we’ve chosen a physical principle that can safely deliver everything from small, low-power devices to large-scale devices. We want it everywhere in the house. To do this, we must work with people and a higher power.
In a wired world, the Quaze wireless power supply system can truly be a beacon of hope. In the near future, wireless technology can become this and extend beyond smartphones and other small gadgets. A lamp powered by Quaze could light the way for the next generation of physicists, engineers and doctors. And Tesla’s dream of wireless power delivery may finally come to fruition, making its late inventor more happy than a company that uses the moniker for expensive cars. Imagine instead that his vision, his passion, shared by his teams at Maingar and Quaze will literally light up our lives and change the way we rule our world.
