Sasha Benz has been in the fashion world for a long time. The mother of three has worked as a freelance stylist for years, contributing to magazines such as Useless fair And Vogue AustraliaBefore starting the lifestyle blog “All My Friends Are Models”. The Sydney-born-New Yorker became creative director of Surf Lodge in Montauk and opened luxury lifestyle boutique, Wild Blue, in Montauk, Aspen and (coming soon) Manhattan. Ahead, Benz talks to Coveteur about her favorite stylish baby products and how she approaches dressing her own kids, plus she shares her summer edit for kids.

Tell me a little about your children’s clothing. Do you like to dress up and decorate yourself these days?
“It was really easy to wear what I wanted until they got to a certain age. I have a six-year-old, a four-year-old and another two-year-old. With my son, I had everything tightly organized and he always looked really cool. There were always accessories… Next I was so grateful to have Seth because I could have overstated the style for him.I really love neutral tones, so that’s how the shop turned out.
When they start turning three and four, that’s when they start to get a real sound of their own. With my daughter, I don’t know if it’s because I suppress color so much, because she’s so beautiful, but she loves everything bright and shiny and glittery and has 17 outfit changes at any given time. My son loves sportswear, but when we go out, he puts his own clothes together and likes to match. Over the years, we’ve said that if you want to come to a nice restaurant with mom and dad, you have to wear your nicest clothes, so I think they’re used to it now. My third daughter only has hands-down. I barely had time to buy her something new. She has boy and girl clothes, but they are still beautiful.
How do you balance function and style when it comes to clothing your kids? Often, some of the most beautiful clothes are very fast or made of fabric that can only be dry cleaned, which is crazy for children.
“When I say we dress kids well, they don’t wear any designer clothes. We’ve got the most beautiful, durable and amazing clothes. We go with fabrics and soft cottons. They learn quickly what’s important. Stuff and anything that works for you with lots of buttons… You don’t want that. You need zippers, my kids.” “I don’t wear uncomfortable things, like tight fabrics or jeans. It’s funny when I see kids in jeans. We work with a lot of great Korean brands for the store—I think they do really well. And then we have a few brands like Easy Folk and Little Creative Factory. It’s really cute.”
You have this wonderful family charm – the store is the perfect expression of it. Is it something you do knowingly? Or does it happen more organically?
“My style has always been a little softer and more neutral with the occasional pop of color here and there. I always wear beautiful gold jewelry… you know, statement pieces. From being a stylist years ago, I quickly learned how to scan a room and take what I want. I know what I like and what I don’t like, although everyone always says we’re too fast when we’re doing our prep for the store. Vision for the store and the same for the kids.”

How has motherhood changed your personal style?
“You start to think more about comfort and practicality. I’ll definitely be ambitious and wear a nice white dress and then I’ll be walking out of my house and suddenly I’ll pass the kids and one of them will grab me and then I’ll have food. With three pregnancies you start to know your body a little better. I always shop for style now.” “And I buy for my body. You know what’s good for you, and it’s important that you feel good. That’s the priority as a mom. You have a lot going on and you’re carrying a lot of weight — physically and mentally. I think I’ve been kinder to myself as I’ve gotten older.”
Clothes can affect your self-esteem in both positive and negative ways. How would you like to teach these lessons to your daughters?
“They’re still very young at this point. I always try to tell them how great they are, not how beautiful or perfect they are. I’ll say ‘I love your freckles’ or something that makes them feel confident. The most important thing is to teach them to say kind things to other people. “She always compliments people and I’ve taught them to feel good when they see someone. It always makes them realize that kindness always wins over complaining. Or whatever.”
I love the gender neutrality of everything you’ve chosen for your kids and the store. It is interesting to note that most baby and children’s clothing these days is still gender specific. Why do you think? Are you upset about this?
“I was talking to someone about this yesterday. I was struggling when I was trying to set up a nursery and I couldn’t find a lot of good things that I liked. I went to Etsy and started customizing a lot of things. . I have a lot going on with my daughter because now she has this unusual hairstyle and she looks so much like my daughter. . I put her in a necklace with a tutu and people say how old is your child. ? That’s why people are used to picking a color and then they know if it’s a boy or a girl and maybe avoid that kind of thing. I don’t know if that’s right, but that’s where it all comes from. I’m sure. Every retailer has their reasons, but I wish people would take a little note from Aussie and European brands.
What are some of your favorite places to shop for your kids (besides Wild Blue, of course)?
“When I travel, I research children’s clothes more. When I’m in Australia, there’s an amazing store called Ashley and Dana, and there’s Mama Papa – those two are my favorites. And I love Lenny Ra’s kids. Those are the three I always go back to.”
