Rosa Mensah was decked out in a top-to-bottom outfit on the first day of the Minnesota State Fair. Her yellow dress was a riot of patterns mixed with turquoise, black and red. Colorful dresses, skirts and wares hung in the background.
Mensah owns the Batakali Fashion Design booth at the International Bazaar where she sells clothes made in Ghana.
Sahan Journal spoke to Mensah from Ghana about the merchandise she sells at the exhibition and online.
What’s all this stuff you’re selling?
“I’m selling dashikis, women’s clothes, dresses, jackets, bags, jewelry, and I also have children’s clothes. Beautiful things! “
Have you had this booth at the fair for a while?
“Yes, this is my third year. The first year I was there, this year they gave me a big booth because I had so much stuff.
How was the desire to have a shop at the fair?
“I’d come to the fair, and I’d see people selling stuff. So I said, ‘Just come in and let me design.’ So I went in and set it up one day, it was fine, and here I am.”
Where did all these clothes come from?
“From Ghana”
Do you have a store like this outside of the State Fair?
“Actually, I don’t have a store, but now I am doing internet sales. I’m going to be on Facebook, Instagram, I’m working on it. Now I’m doing pop-up programs.”

How was business this opening day?
“Well, today is the first day, so people are trying to see what they like. They buy it if they want it.
Are there any deals you want people to know about?
“I’m reasonable, believe me. When you buy something, you’ll have fun and come back again, because my stuff makes sense. A place you can’t afford isn’t expensive.”
