Expected to head to the streaming service later this year, a new documentary tells the story of the birth of Italian ready-to-wear, paying tribute to Giorgio Armani for putting Milan on the fashion world map.
Giorgio Armani and several fashion executives attended the premiere of the documentary “Milano: The Inside Story of Italian Fashion” by Emmy-winning filmmaker John Maggio on Sunday.
The documentary put Milan ready-to-wear on the map in the 1980s, creating menswear with a sexy and relaxed jacket, portrayed by Richard Gere as “American Gigolo”.
“Fashion has made me grow and become a person. It wasn’t easy at first, because I didn’t feel like it, but gradually I found the courage to want to be a person in this adventure,” Armani said upon arriving at the premiere.
The 88-year-old designer debuted his new womenswear collection earlier in the day and received a standing ovation as producer Alan Friedman introduced them to the most fashionable crowd as the film premiered. Milan would not be a fashion capital today.
The documentary chronicles the rivalry between Armani and its classic beauty and Gianni Versace, who helped fuel the supermodel era with his more overtly sensual collections.
In the documentary, former Gucci creative director Tom Ford and former Gucci CEO Domenico de Sole discuss the attempts to merge Gucci and Versace, which ultimately resulted in Versace’s 2010 merger. .
In the intervening years, Gucci, along with several other Italian family-run companies, was bought by French conglomerates, and Versace is now part of the American group Capri Holdings. Italy was unable to create its own fashion group to challenge French supremacy; Fashion houses such as Armani and Dolce & Gabbana are among those remaining firmly in family hands.
The documentary is expected to be released on the streaming service later this year.
