What is Apple Business Manager?
Apple Business Manager enables IT administrators to manage and deploy Apple devices and applications across their organization. It is designed to automate device registration and make it easy to purchase/distribute applications to a device management solution. When an IT manager purchases a device from the Apple Business Portal or an Apple Authorized Reseller, it is automatically added to Apple Business Manager. When an employee boots up a Mac for the first time, it’s recognized as part of a business, so it begins the process of connecting to the device management system, installing applications, setting up configuration profiles, etc. To be perfectly clear. It is an amazing solution especially for remote organizations.
Adding devices purchased elsewhere to Apple Business Manager
If you bought a Mac from Amazon because of a good sale, or if you want something faster than Apple can bring you, Apple isn’t going to feature Business Manager. That doesn’t mean you can’t deploy it in your device management solution, but it does mean it won’t be part of a zero-touch deployment model. At the end of 2021, Apple released the Apple configuration for the iPhone.
Using Apple Configurator on an iPhone, it is only possible to add iPhones to Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager that were not purchased directly from Apple or an authorized reseller. Only Macs with T2 chips (2018 or later) or Apple Silicon chips (M1 or later) are compatible with this configuration method using Apple Configurator on iPhone.
New options to install Mac to Apple Business Manager
In the past few weeks, a new page appeared on Apple’s developer portal with the following information.
Third-party MDM apps allow users to add macOS and iOS devices to their organization.
This framework provides a user interface for device administrators to add macOS, iOS, and iPadOS devices to Apple School Manager, Apple Business Manager, and Apple Business Essentials organizations. The provided SwiftUI view allows a user with Device Enrollment privileges to sign in with their Managed Apple ID and add devices to their organization.
This feature requires Bluetooth access to find and pair with nearby devices and camera access to scan image pairing pin codes. To use this feature, you must be entitled to Automated Device Enrollment. See Automated Device Enrollment Rights Request for permission for this right.
To top it all off, it now means that device management vendors can build their own apps to add Macs to Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager. Why is this important?
