Sony has licensed eye tracking technology for the PlayStation VR2 headset.

That’s what producer Toby – himself a “global leader in vision monitoring and pioneering computing” – announced on Friday that his technology will be featured in the PlayStation 5 VR headset.

“PlayStation VR2 will launch a new platform for immersive virtual reality entertainment that will enable millions of users around the world to experience the power of vision,” said Toby CEO Andand Srivatasa.

“Our partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is to ensure that Toby’s world-leading technology capability delivers innovative solutions in the wholesale market segment.”

He said the company would receive an advance income as part of the agreement from 2022.

Toby sells eye and head tracking cameras at RRP for $ 230 / £ 230. The cameras use a custom infrared optical sensor to monitor users’ eye movements, which supports more than 50 games including Far Cry 6 and Flight Simulator.

Supported games can be controlled using eye movement for tasks such as targeting and selecting objects, and visual images can be logged in and out depending on where the player is viewing.

Toby runs a PC app that monitors brain activity only on compatible gaming laptops, allowing users to control in-game cameras.

During a briefing earlier this year, Sony confirmed its interest in including eye monitoring in PSVR2 and outlined its features.

“By eye tracking, the PS VR2 detects the movement of your eyes, so a simple view in a specific direction creates more input for game characters,” he said.

“This allows players to communicate in a new and realistic way in a way that gives them a new level of reality and improved expression in the game.”

SIE has confirmed that the new headset supports Foveated rendering, a display that uses eye tracking to reduce image quality in the user’s peripheral view.

The new headset still doesn’t have an official release window, but Sony said more than 20 games will be available soon for the PlayStation VR 2 launch.
