American Airlines Group Inc. today announced that it will appoint Deere & Co. Chief Information Officer Ganesh Jayaram as Chief Digital and Information Officer, effective September 1.

Mr Jayaram will report to US CEO Robert Isom and replace Maya Leibman, who previously announced she would be moving to the UK for family reasons. Ms. Leibman has served as US CIO since 2012 and will continue with the company in a consulting role.

Mr. Jayaram was earlier appointed as Deere’s COA with effect from May 31. Prior to that, he spent nearly 16 years at Deere in various information technology and business roles, including six years as vice president of IT.

Prior to his career at the farm machinery maker, Mr. Jayaram held roles at Danaher. Corporation

Canon America and Boston Consulting Group.

Mr. Isom said American began looking for a new chief technology officer when Ms. Leibman announced in May that she was moving to England, and Mr. Leibman was instrumental in Mr. Jayaram’s selection.

“He has played leadership roles in both the business and technology teams, always focusing on collaboration across disciplines across his team,” Mr. Isom wrote in an internal memo issued today to all US employees. The amount of work is very similar to that in the US – and this allows it to increase rapidly in a relatively short period of time.

Ms. Leibman, who is American, said she will assume new international responsibilities in the transition until the end of the year.

During her tenure as CIO, Ms. Leibman led major IT initiatives, including leading American’s transition to the cloud and integrating IT systems following American’s merger with US Airways.

“Thank you to Maya and her team for all the work they have done to prepare us for the future,” Mr Isom wrote.

Raj Kalathur, who held the CIO position at Deere before Mr. Jayaram, has redefined his role at the company in addition to his current role as Chief Financial Officer and President of John Deere Finance.
