The United States has extended its travel ban on North Korea for another year, a US government announcement said on Wednesday.
The State Department announced the ban through August 31, 2023 in a Federal Register notice published Tuesday (US time). The ban — originally imposed in 2017 and renewed annually since — expires at the end of this month.
“The Department of State has determined that there is a serious threat to the detention and long-term detention of U.S. citizens and nationals that would pose an imminent risk to their physical safety,” it read. “Accordingly, all U.S. passports remain invalid for travel to, within, or to the DPRK, except under the authority of the Secretary of State for such travel.”
DPRK is the Democratic Republic of Korea, the official name of the North.
In September 2017, the United States imposed a travel ban on North Korea after the death of American student Otto Warmbier, who was fatally shot in North Korea for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. (Yonhap)
