Amber Ruffin reviews the PatBO Fall/Winter 2023 collection

Yesterday, I went to the Pathbo show in Manhattan. It was my first fashion show. Now, I’ve never thought of this before, but maybe I’m just a sweet little fashionista.

Day-to-day I dress like a little slippery monster. Cruel and sleepy and baggy and warm. Here’s a little story to help you understand: A friend of mine once stayed over and needed to borrow pajamas. So I sent her to my closet to find her. She said, “I found them!” she shouted. And when she came back to the room, she was wearing the clothes I normally wear to work. So that’s where I’m at.

I know nothing about fashion shows except what I have seen on television. Here’s how I thought it would go down:

Everyone will be cold and strange.

I couldn’t understand what was going on.

I was ashamed of myself.

Here’s how Really It came down.

Everyone was as good as they were impeccably dressed.

I felt like it was a show that was perfectly made for me to enjoy.

(Ed note: I embarrass myself.)

When I got into the car for the first time with my sister, Lacey, who was accompanying me to the show, we both quickly realized that we had no idea where the show was. We’ve arrived and it’s at the atrium in Surrogate’s Court. Fringe Fashion Show at Court! Interesting. Everyone in it screams about that choice. Inviting everyone into this magnificent seven-story space, made almost entirely of marble, is a stinking genius.

Here’s an unusual sentence: Before the show, I was talking to Kelsea Ballerini from where I was sitting (fun!). You talk to me about how we come to this show to encourage designers and show our support and that’s what everyone at the show is doing. I thought of it as “a cool place to look” but it was actually a “community hangout that loves the work of designer Patricia Bonaldi”. I thought that was a beautiful way to look at it. And the more I talk to people, the more I realize this is true.

Anyway, at this point, I want to apologize for waiting so long to get to the outfit. Because I will think about these summaries for the rest of my days.

I fell in love the moment the show started. Each of my dresses took me to a colorful fantasy land. Remember when Maria and Tony met for the first time West Side Story? Like, the rest of the world disappears and it’s just the two of them in their own lights, looking lovingly into each other’s eyes? Think about it like a million times in 30 minutes. I was gasping for breath. I’m so sorry this is a drama, but it has to be. he said. Wrote: I was a little worried that I wasn’t good enough to be there now, but when I arrived, I realized that I wasn’t too old or too young or too smart or too dumb, or too cool or too cool. I was an appreciator of beauty, and Bonaldi was exactly that for me.

There were more elaborate clothes than I had ever seen in my entire life. I can’t explain it to you, but it was purple in this show, it was so bright, you’d think you could see it in the dark, the richest color I’ve ever seen. There were delicate fabrics, innovative ideas and dresses featuring intricate bead work. She seemed to inject as much glamor as she could into every room, a choice she made over and over again.

My row breathes loudly. Freezing jaws on the floor, only to lose it. I felt bad, but then I realized we were all doing it. Every time a new look hits the runway, we all can’t help ourselves. “Oh!”, “Oh!” And “I want this!” over and over.

I’m about to finish, just a second…

I’m so glad I went to the PatBO show, but I’m so sad I can only tell you about my experience at it. Page Screen. Promise me you’ll ask me about it the next time we meet, and I’ll shake my shoulders and go, “That’s it.” so true A dreamer!”

This was the best experience for my first fashion show. Next time, I hope it will be higher end pajamas.

(One of the costumes shocked me so much, I literally said, “Oh, shit!”). way Very loud. But I couldn’t help it. These are the most beautiful clothes I have ever seen.)
