Talk about a catwalk.
New York Fashion Week kicked off Friday with a bang — or rather, a bark.
Audiences howled at the Collina Strada Fall 2023 show, where the designer wowed and wowed audiences with ethereal ensembles in animal prosthetics.
The collection titled “Please Don’t Eat My Friends” represents the latest designs from the eco-friendly fashion house. It’s dividing the internet, with some keyboard critics calling it “weird” and “fantasy.”
Animorphic models crawled, crawled and jumped on the bewildered audience instead of walking down the balcony. From reptilian to upright bird, the models sport long ear pieces, teal beaks, reptile masks and pig noses, some purring or screeching as they move.
Wildlife has transformed Soho THC NYC, an immersive cannabis experience, into a cultivated animal kingdom. Some models carried props that matched their outfits — a barrel of hay and another creative director Hilary Taymor’s pet Pomeranian, Powhee.
A model appeared donning what looked like a synthetic reptile with a full head. A plaid green trench coat and layered, wool-colored pieces finished the outfit.
Another flashed a mouse-like pink nose and clutched a pink and green tote that matched the mesh fox and their red fur color scheme.
The show featured transgender model Aaron Rose Phillips, who has cerebral palsy. She became the first black, trans model with a disability to be signed by a major modeling agency – Elite Model Management, early in her career.
In the year In a 2021 interview with Vogue, the 21-year-old model, who used a wheelchair at the Colina Strada show, said her runway debut with Moschino for the spring 2022 collection was her biggest career achievement at the time.
At Collina Strada, Taymor closed the show by slipping on her own pointy ear prosthesis and a graphic tee with an animal print.
When asked about the split look, brand representatives pointed to the post for the collection’s press release. Colina Strada says it wants to celebrate “core truths,” “both our inner show pony, playful and fond of feather-ruffling, and our inner workhorse, reliable, durable and incredibly practical.”
In an Instagram post, Taymor called the presentation a “dream day,” sharing some up-close-and-personal images of the models in prosthetics.
Commenting on the post, people agreed on the “cliff” look and praised the edgy designer for her unique look.
One user wrote: “Congested.”
“Wild!” the other shouted.
A third said, “Incredible ideas for a fashion show.” “I just love it.”
Colina Strada’s designs also had tongues wagging on TikTok, with some viewers at home expressing dismay and disbelief.
“This is real,” exclaimed one user after watching a clip of the show.
“These shows are getting weirder,” said another.
One user said, “No, it’s hard for me.
“You can’t pay me enough to want to be a model that I have to do,” lamented one disappointed viewer.
Meanwhile, on Twitter A user is sad“What’s going on at Colina Strada?”
“I really like it,” one fan replied in the thread.
“This is camp,” announced one user.
“Remake lord of the rings but wear the covers like this,” added another with a heart-eyed emoji.
“But tempers have made it fashionable,” cried another.
“This is my biggest nightmare,” exclaimed one horrified user.
“Cats 2,” scoffed another.
