Air Canada has canceled employee travel privileges.

One of the wonderful benefits of working in the airline industry is access to travel privileges. However, some people don’t seem to have this coming through with certain expectations related to character and behavior.

Why did Air Canada cancel employee travel benefits?

Some people just don’t seem to know when to stop. The daughter of an Air Canada employee is venting her grievances in the media after her mother’s employee was denied travel privileges with the airline.

The woman said she had lodged a complaint with the airline following poor customer service by ground staff while holding travel privileges with her mother’s staff. The woman not only emailed top officials in the airline but also copied media outlets. The woman allegedly misrepresented herself as an incoming customer rather than someone traveling under employee privilege.

Both the 62-year-old Air Canada employee (who is a manager) and her daughter have had their rights to travel with the airline suspended for two years over the incident. The woman says one of the reasons her mother took the job at Air Canada was the travel privileges, and she was worried her mother might lose her job if the situation worsened.

Now the woman is again going to the media to complain about the treatment of her and her mother, who have been denied their rights.

“When my mother told me what they had done to her, I felt so happy and sick. It is one thing for me to be disciplined, but it is quite another for my actions to affect my mother.”

The employee is said to have gone to the union to protest this decision, but the union said that nothing could be done and suggested that she apologize to the airline to reduce her fine.

An Air Canada spokesperson released the following statement regarding the situation:

“We work directly with our employees on internal issues. However, we make sure that employee travel is a privilege and a unique and generous benefit of working for the airline, a responsibility that most employees and families understand and value.”

“We take feedback about our service seriously. In fact, we investigated the complaint and found facts that did not match what was presented.”

Air Canada has suspended the employee’s travel rights

This is ridiculous.

Obviously we do not know the substance of the complaint to Air Canada. However, no matter how you slice it, the worker’s daughter has crossed the line and continues to dig herself (her mother) a deep hole.

  • When using employee travel benefits, you must agree to certain terms and conditions
  • Even if you have a legitimate complaint, you can’t present yourself as a paying customer, and you shouldn’t try to interfere in the media trying to solve an internal problem.
  • Her mother was angry that she was reprimanded for her actions; This is how it works when you use employee travel entitlements.
  • Even the union made it clear that nothing could be done to protect the employee and that she should apologize
  • Even after all this happened, the woman still went to the media to complain about the outcome, saying that her mother might now lose her job (which could very well happen if she kept this up).

The level of entitlement here is kind of mind boggling. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen someone travel with review benefits, and it’s why some airline staff are afraid of this type of behavior and hesitate to extend travel privileges to their friends and family.

While the travel privileges of airline employees are impressive, they come with certain behavioral requirements. I think this Air Canada employee’s daughter is a perfect example of how not to act when traveling with airline benefits.

The fact that this person is still going to the media and trying to mediate is a very strange move, if you ask me… I don’t see this ending well for her or her mother.
