SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A longtime locally owned sunglasses and souvenir store in Santa Barbara is closing next month.

Fashion Eyes opened in 1988.

Owners Victor and Lucy Chang are selling their stock at up to 40% off.

The location in the 700 block of State Street should be open by the end of September. It is across from Paseo Nuevo Mall.

The store is loaded with both high-end, high-end and budget sunglasses, along with postcards, t-shirts and collectibles.

“Yes, we’ve been coming here my whole life because it’s important to have good sunglasses, especially for lifeguarding and the many sports we love,” said Governor Rafael Carrillo.

For Fashion Eyes owner Lucy Chang and her husband Victor, there was constant competition from other nearby stores and online vendors. . “The price we’re selling now is better than the line,” she said.

There is also a personal touch.

“I check everything on the wall. Before we put every single pair on the shelf. We make sure they’re straight and level and beautiful. They’ll fit a lot of people. I’m good at working. I’m sure I’m self-taught,” said Victor Chang.

Lucy Chang, “When you buy a pair of sunglasses and no one helps you, you probably have crooked frames without realizing it.”

Sheila Diano found a pair that fit perfectly, and the customer said, “I bike to work every day. They fit perfectly.”

The retirement sale will last until September and will be 40-80 percent off.

“A couple of times we’d lose a nose piece or something and we’d go in and half the time he’d give it to us. He’s really kind,” Carrillo said.

Lucy Chang, local customers, “They are like friends, not just customers.”

The downtown area has been a challenge for years, and many efforts are underway to revitalize the heart of Santa Barbara’s shopping district, along with the newly constructed State St. Promenade.

For the Changs, it was time to retire and not relocate.
