ABB has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire the low voltage NMA motor business from Siemens.
With manufacturing operations in Guadalajara, Mexico, this acquisition provides a well-established product portfolio, a North American customer base and an experienced operations, sales and management team, ABB said. The business employs about 600 people and generates revenue of about $63 million by 2021. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2023.
ABB added that the transaction is part of a profitable growth strategy for the Motion business area, which will enable the NMA Motors division to increase its product offering, expand its supply chain relationships and improve its support to its North American customer base. It also provides the opportunity to better support customers in Mexico through local manufacturing and sales. ABB expects to benefit from distinct synergies and leverage R&D expertise, supply chain relationships and market access to bring the combined portfolio to its full potential.
“This acquisition of Bolt creates strong value for ABB’s NMA Motors division,” said President ABB Motion. “Investing in the business and opening up sales opportunities in North America and especially in Mexico will allow this business to be approved for ABB’s activity business within 24 months.”
“We have long admired the quality and design of these engines,” added Jesse Henson, president of ABB’s NMA Engines division. “Now that we have met the leadership team behind them, I am even more confident that together we can grow our combined business more than either of us could alone. We look forward to adding the Siemens low voltage NEMA motor portfolio to our existing ABB and Baldor-Reliance® industrial electric motor offerings.”
The global NEMA motor industry, valued at approximately $2.7 billion, includes industrial electric motors used primarily in North America. NEMA motors are essential components used to move equipment in applications such as food and beverage, oil and gas, mining and aggregate, water and wastewater, and equipment that moves air, fluids and units.
