SANTA FE, NM – We know bees love lavender and now many of them have a new place to stay in Santa Fe that’s just for them.
The Bee Hotel is now open for business on the Santa Fe River near East Alameda and Camino Escondido. It is also a work of art by providing a place for solitary bees to nest and lay their eggs.
“And what they do is they go into a pollinator house that we’ve created and they have a screened-in area with wooden furniture and tubes, and they go in there and drop their eggs and stuff. A tube of pollen and stuff.” said Elizabeth Jacobson in Poetic Pollen.
Julie Chase-Daniel and Jacobson and the Bee Hotel have started the “poetry polls” and eco-poetry public art initiative for the city.
It was made from a 2,000-pound section of an old cottonwood tree that was removed from Rose Park in the past due to ill health. Now it’s getting a second life, giving life to native bees and giving life to native plants.
“Native bees — because they don’t brood or make honey, they don’t get affected, and they grow more diverse plans than honey bees,” Chase-Daniels said.
Jacobson and Chase-Daniel said the bee hotel will not only help the native bee population thrive, but also help educate the public about the importance of caring for the valuable species.
It has one panel for education and one panel for poetry – which changes every season.
“One of our main goals is to create awareness so that people can visit the site and see the structure and understand that these are damaged and maybe other people can create these houses or take care of the creatures when they see them. Just to support the whole environmental situation that is going on along the river – the project is a lot – Jacobson.
