President Joe Biden said his administration was still discussing tariffs on Chinese imports from China, and that he was waiting for a “short-term” decision.
“No, we’re having more discussions,” Biden told reporters in Delaware on Sunday.
The Biden administration is considering easing some Trump-era tariffs on consumer goods from China due to divisions within the group. Top US and Chinese officials discussed US economic sanctions and tariffs last week.
“We were talking and we expect a decision soon,” Raymond said earlier on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Trade unions and some senior officials, including trade representative Katherine Tyne, support the tariff, which they believe will help the United States negotiate with China. Others, such as US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, have argued for lowering tariffs on Chinese goods to curb rapid inflation and reduce the cost of living for 40 years.
“We need to be clear about what tariffs work and what doesn’t, right?” Raimondo told the NBC. “Like, raising tariffs does not significantly lower inflation.”
“The only thing that can do is to help consumers with some furniture,” she said. The most important step for Biden is to ensure that “American workers are not harmed.”
Former President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on various Chinese products since July 2018, forcing China to transfer technology to US companies. The Biden administration said it would review the tariffs in May to prevent the process from ending in July.
Raymond said last month that the U.S. had decided to keep tariffs on steel and aluminum but could drop them on other goods.
