Passengers could expect major delays at San Diego International Airport from Tuesday to Friday, as it was planned to demolish the Terminal 1 pedestrian bridge.
Landline services, taxis, rides, decent vehicles and rental buses will be temporarily relocated to the former terminal 1 parking lot, said Sabrina Lopicolo, an airline spokeswoman.
All passengers using these services must cross the Terminal 1 crossing into the parking lot.
Private vehicles travel to Terminal 1 transit islands to drop off or pick up passengers. Passengers are instructed to enter the terminal and private vehicles using the sidewalk in front of Terminal 1.
“Everyone coming to the airport – flying, taking off or landing – must be prepared for congestion and delays,” said Lopicolo. “Plan to arrive early and be careful when traveling to work. Volunteers will stop for passengers arriving and departing from Terminal 1.
Parking space at the airport will be very limited. Here are some tips for passengers:
- Use public transportation to the airport. Try the free San Diego flyer, the last mile between the Old Town Transit Center and the airport. MTS offers free shuttle travel from the airport to downtown during the 992 bus to Labor Day.
- Download or pick up at friends or family, taxi, elevator, Uber or other boarding options.
- If you park in the airport, reserve a parking space. You can work for Terminal 2 parking lot or valet. Passengers can drive in Terminal Loop Shuttle if there is parking in Terminal 2 parking lot, but if you are flying from Terminal 1.
The new Terminal 1 parking lot is expected to open in the fall of 2024.
Air travelers have faced other challenges not only in San Diego but also nationally this summer. Airlines have canceled several flights and canceled several other delays.
Cancellations fall on Sunday – not a big trip on a holiday weekend – according to FlightAware.com, it reported 300 US flights to 5:30 pm and 3,887 state delays.
