Your first BAFTA TV Awards – as a nominee, no less – requires a particularly special outfit. This was the case with actress Adelaio Adedayo who attended last night’s event from Bianca Saunders’ first womenswear collection.
“Bianca is a black British woman from London, that’s all I know,” Adedayo said. “I love seeing her do amazing things because she’s so talented – she’s an inspiration.”
In addition to finding the perfect outfit, Adedayo credits the styling process with allowing her to feel confident when she steps onto that red carpet. She worked closely with stylist Georgia Medley to find a feel that resonated with her, which she intends to carry with her when creating future event collections.
“This is my first time participating like this and I want to continue the process this way,” she said. “Walking the red carpet can be nerve-wracking sometimes, so feeling like you’ve chosen something that looks stunning and makes you feel confident makes all the difference.”
There is no doubt that Adedayo looked anything but stunning at last night’s awards. Here she speaks. Bazaar About her tomboyish evolution, confidence and why fashion is so important.
Please tell us about your look – why do you think this suits you?
“My dress was Bianca Saunders, she made her debut in womenswear and it was one of the first dresses online. I was one of the first people to wear the dress, so it felt special. It was perfect, just how I wanted it. It’s very recognizable and timeless, but this is my first BAFTA. So in a small way. I didn’t want to look back at the pictures and date them and just remember the happy memories of this time. That’s why we’re going.”
How do you decide which brands you want to work with?
“Whether it fits my style or not, it makes me feel comfortable and makes me feel like my best self. It’s also important to see what the brand stands for and what the ethos is. Bianca is a black English woman from London. What I do know is that she’s very talented and has gone on to do amazing things.” I love looking at her, she’s an inspiration. In the end, it’s a combination of who’s behind the brand, what kind of style they have, and that style makes me feel good about myself. It makes me feel beautiful and comfortable. I want to go out with confidence, feel good, and do what I need to do.
How involved are you with the styling process?
“Working with my stylist, Georgia Medley, we sat down together and talked about my passion, style and energy and personality. Then we looked for brands that embodied that in their designs. We created a board that spoke to me. It was great to be involved in that way, I felt like I was a part of building and conceptualizing the look. Sometimes stepping out on the red carpet can feel really nerve-wracking, so feeling like you’ve chosen something that looks stunning and makes you feel confident makes all the difference.
What fashion makes you feel the most confident?
“I like to wear mom jeans with a crop top or something similar – it’s very comfortable but has a bit of an edge to it. My aesthetic is very much a tomboy, so I like things that feel a bit high, like good jeans and such. A simple white t-shirt, you can’t go wrong. Then in the winter You can cut a nice jacket over it during the season.
How has your style evolved over the years?
“I was a real tomboy when I was a kid. I have a special memory that I’ll never forget. My mom and I were going to church and she made me wear a white dress, which I wasn’t at that age. I remember crying a lot and I didn’t understand and she was like, ‘What? It’s just clothes!” I still have that tomboy element coming into my own a little bit, so I like something with an edge and a touch of femininity. My style has changed from tomboy to tomboy chic, I’m coining that new phrase. .”
What is your most memorable fashion moment in recent years and why?
“Yesterday at the BAFTAs. It was so beautiful and classic. Knowing that it was her first step into womenswear made me feel very special, because I was one of the first people to wear that dress. It was a great moment for me.”
Whose style have you always admired and why?
“As far as fashion is concerned, it’s only in the last three or four years that I’ve started to look at what people wear and understand the fashion world. I’m just starting to dip my toe in. Zendaya always has the craziest red carpet looks, she’s really cute and a little bit cute. I love it when you do something different.
What kind of fit is your readiness to prepare?
“Of course there’s some music playing, maybe Afrobeats. If I’m getting ready for a special event, there’ll be a glass of champagne. As long as there’s music and I can do a little dance while I’m getting ready, that’s it. It’s the best thing, it puts me in a great mood.”
Can you talk us through your vision for the BAFTA TV Awards?
“Because the dress is so clean and classic, we were able to create a slightly stronger beauty look using Lancôme products. We wanted to create a smoky eye that accentuated my eyes and face. We pushed my hair back and added a bit of shimmer. In the end, I think it created a really beautiful silhouette and took the dress up a notch.” My makeup artist, Michelle, didn’t want to hide my face, so that’s what we went with.
“I went a bit out of my comfort zone, especially with my eye make-up. I’m usually very plain with my make-up and tend to go with just mascara, lip balm and a bit of powder. I really loved this look for the BAFTAs, the smoky eye gave me confidence and felt really powerful, especially my hair. By pushing back. It helped me walk out on the red carpet feeling beautiful and confident.”
Do I get any beauty or skin care in preparation for a red-carpet event?
“On set, I had Dr. Barbara Sturm’s facial, which was amazing. For the next three days, I was literally glowing. Before our facial, she asked me what kind of skin I had. I always thought I had dry skin, but after my soothing facial, I had dry skin. “She said I had it, and it was a game changer. She added hyaluronic serum throughout the treatment, so after each step, she used some serum to really hydrate my skin. It completely changed my face. It took away that dull look.”
How does skin care and makeup affect your confidence?
“When I wake up from a good night’s sleep, I see a lot of color on my face and I feel confident, so I go out with lip balm and mascara. I take skincare. I’m very serious and always very careful about what I put on my face and I always make time for my nightly routine.” Makeup, whether it’s going out with friends or to an event, it’s important to have the right look. It makes you feel good. If you get it right, you’ll feel confident and have a better time.
When do you feel most beautiful?
“When I feel truly at home with myself, that’s when I feel good.”
Although fashion is known as vanity, why is the clothes we wear important?
“People in general are always trying to connect with each other, and one of the ways we do that is by telling them who we are. Fashion is an outward expression of who you are, and it’s the first thing people see. It’s one of the many ways to say, ‘This is me.'” Fashion has many different ways to make you feel in the clothes you wear, whether you feel comfortable or not, and it also boosts your confidence. Make you feel good. Fashion is very important.
