MORGANTON — The No. 12 West Virginia baseball team battled hard to win its fifth consecutive Big 12 series with a 5-3 win over Texas Tech on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers improved to 39-13 and 15-6 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders fell to 35-18 and 10-11 in conference play.

The Mountaineers are now two games up on Oklahoma State, with three games left in the Big 12 standings, and three up on Texas, the last opponent of the season. WVU is just one win shy of matching the program record of 40 set in 1994.

“This team is amazing in the way they bounce back from things.” said head coach Randy Mazzee. “The way we hit, the way we play, the way we play defense, you’re checking a lot of boxes, but nothing is unfinished, you can’t feel too good about it. The next game is always the most important of the year and that won’t change now.

Sophomore JJ Wetherholt and redshirt senior Caleb McNally each hit home runs as Wetherholt tied the game and McNally proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore Grant Hussey hit two home runs yesterday and had two more hits on Sunday with a pair of RBIs.

On the mound, Mazzei went to the bullpen early in the first inning with graduate Noah Short and threw his 72nd career scoreless inning, setting a WVU program record.

Redshirt-freshman David Hagaman picked up his first career win with 3.2 no-hit innings, striking out 3. Junior Carlson Reed pitched 2.0 innings with four strikeouts for his seventh save of the season.

The Red Raiders jumped out to 2-0 leads in the first and second, but as they have done all season, the Mountaineers never fell behind early and improved to 13-2 in games against their opponents. In the first inning and the score was 14-4, the opponent scored first.
