When I bring friends to Logan County, there are a few things on my “must see” list. At the top of my list are a few things around Bellefontaine.
Ann Louden from the Logan County Chamber of Commerce talks about the great things to do in Logan County:
We begin our tour at the tip of Ohio, Campbell Hill. Campbell Hill It sits at an elevation of 1,549.09 feet above sea level and is the highest elevation in Ohio, and is located two miles from downtown Bellefontaine. The top is the former home of Bellefontaine Air Force Base, where the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron maintained a Cold War early warning radar. The conference is currently held at the Ohio High-Point Career Center and is open to visitors Monday through Friday.
Next on my tour we headed to the first concrete street that honors George Bartholomew, the man who brought cement and concrete to the Midwest. In the 19th century, so-called “artificial stone,” the new mixture called concrete was not yet used for paving roads. George convinced the Bellefontaine City Council to try it in 1891 at the Logan County Courthouse on Court Avenue. He issued a bond guaranteeing that the asphalt would last for at least five years. A hundred years later, George’s concrete road still stands. It is now known as the “Oldest Concrete Street in America”.
Next on our tour is the World’s Shortest Street, another popular feature of Bellefontaine. McKinley Street, named after the president, is only 15 feet. There is nothing exciting about it, but it has a very good reason.
