Lubbock, Texas – Texas Tech rallied from behind on Friday night to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to beat Sam Houston 12-10 at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders recorded four-straight two-out singles in the eighth, the last three each being RBI hits.
Ty Coleman, who was not in Friday’s starting lineup, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and led off the impressive night with a single off the bench in the eighth.
Gavin Cash picked up his second run of the night following Coleman’s single to start the eighth. After an official review of the recent home run, the ruling on the field was upheld with the Red Raiders still trailing 10-9. Cash would eventually fly out and Austin Green struck out for the second out.
“I didn’t think twice about it,” head coach Tim Tadlock said when asked about the evaluation. “I knew we had the bat left, I knew the guys were going to try to grind the bats, win the pitches and do what needed to be done out there. We were fortunate that the balls got some holes, and I’d like to say Ty put together a good at-bat to start things off.
With Coleman still standing at first base representing the game-tying run, the Red Raiders dug in for four-straight base hits in the lineup, starting with Hudson White. The runs were pushed in by a pair of pinch hitters, Drew Woodcox and Dylan Maxcy, and Zach Voletich hitting between the two.
Woodcox tied the game with a first pitch that saw her muscle a 10-10 ball into shallow right field. Voletich led off a 2-2 run to left to give Tech an 11-10 lead. Maxey worked the entire count before hitting an RBI single to left field to give Tech an insurance run.
Sam Houston’s offense was firing all night as the bases were kept busy with 13 hits, eight walks were issued by Tech pitching as well as a hit-by-pitch. The Bearcats scored in each inning through the eighth and ninth.
Derek Bridges got the win (1-0) by retiring the last in the top of the eighth. He inherited runners on the corners and two outs and picked off a baserunner at first before retiring the batter he faced. Brandon Beckel picked up his third save over the last three games.
Tech outshot SHSU 15 to 13, but the offense used big scoring innings, but just like the Bearkats were cutting. The Red Raiders hit Sam Houston for six runs in the second and scored three in the sixth in addition to a three-run rally.
Joining Coleman as a multi-player late in the night was Cash’s 2-for-5 night, which included his 21st home run of the season in the sixth. White and Vooletic also finished 2-for-4.
