ALPENA – Last week, the Alpena Community College Manufacturing Technology team competed at the 2023 SkillsUSA Michigan State Leadership and Skills Conference and walked away with multiple medals.

SkillsUSA is a career and technical student organization dedicated to fostering relationships between students, faculty and industry workers and developing the skilled workforce of the future.

As part of this, SkillsUSA hosts a number of competitions across the country, testing skills ranging from welding to baking.

ACC students competing include Ethan Johnson, Tanner Hatch, Rachel Baker, Garrett McQuarrie, Ethan Chase, Harrison Butch, Ashton Hough.

Last weekend’s event was held in Grand Rapids and saw the Manufacturing Technology Group take home five gold medals in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Technician, CNC Turning, CNC Milling, Hand Milling and Technical Drafting and six Silver Medals in Technical Drafting, Welding. In general, gas metal arc welding, and group welding.

“You don’t really know what you’re dealing with until you get there,” said Andrew Padd, a consultant at the Manufacturing Technology Group, when asked how the group prepared for the conference. “We are prepared by practicing our trade.”

Although four of the medalists qualified for the national event, it is not yet known whether any of them will participate.

The ACC Manufacturing Technology Group is a cross-departmental collaboration to develop students’ manufacturing skills, including machine tool technology, CAD engineering technology and welding technology, and give them the opportunity to practice those skills through testing competitions such as SkillsUSA.
