The fourth annual Far North Fashion Show last Thursday drew a large crowd to the Anchorage Museum of History and Art.
The event showcases indigenous designs, traditional, modern and a mix of the two. This year’s highlight was the three-day Arctic Connectivity Symposium, with nearly 1,000 participants from more than two dozen countries. Participants included ambassadors from Arctic and non-Arctic countries, prominent Arctic scientists, and members of Congress.
The Far North fashion show provided a break from policy discussions.
Models walking the runway at this year’s event wore parkas, dresses and other accessories designed by Corinne Danner, Alana Jones, Diana Martin, Cara Qualuq McDonnell, Myrna Lomac Wharton and Jackie Catalina Shafer.
Designers are experienced. Some have their own clothing business. Wharton is a respected Yup’k leather-saver and Schaefer, who is Inupiat and director of climate initiatives at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Alliance, earned a fashion degree from the American College in London.
The show closed with a performance by Tanam Anchi Collective Unangax group.
