After hosting Albany last Wednesday, the UConn women’s lacrosse team returned to action on Tuesday, playing on the road at Hofstra.
Connecticut (5-3) has seen an up-and-down season so far, failing to string together more than two wins at a time. However, they have shown great potential in dominating fashion, beating the great Danes yet. Their total of 20 goals on Wednesday was a season high, with five different players getting hat-tricks: Raya Davis, Kate Shafer, Susan LaFountain, Leah Laprise and Morgan Carter. They will certainly look to keep this offensive momentum going to grab their first road win of the year.
It was Davis who was the star player of the season last week, having a career-high five goals and two assists for seven total points at Morone Stadium. Shaffer, UConn’s leading scorer, also had seven points of her own with four goals and three assists. With offensive weapons that can easily find the net for their teammates, Connecticut has been on offense this season.
On defense, the Huskies have a dynamo in the net in Landyn White. She picked up Eastern Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and currently ranks 4th and 6th in the nation with 11.88 and 51.6% saves per game. With White back defending, it won’t be easy for the Pride forwards to find the net.
Hofstra (3-7) slipped after a 2-0 start, knocking off LIU and No. 25 Vanderbilt before dropping seven of its last eight contests. Make no mistake about this group though – they are not to be underestimated. They have suffered brutal losses by one-point margins in two of their last three matches, including against then-No. 20 USC at home. The Pride are waiting for the ball to finally roll their way, and hope it does the same on Tuesday.
Leading Hofstra in scoring on the year is senior Taylor Mennella. The Smithtown, NY native has 28 points to her name, split evenly between 14 goals and assists. She added two goals on four shots in the team’s recent 3-point loss to Towson and will look to lead her team one more time.
The opening draw in Hempstead, NY is set for 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on FloSports.
