Hiking and camping gear
Most of the US, UK and Canada are in a cold snap, although it’s time for warm weather hiking in much of the American desert southwest. doesn’t matter. Every season is hiking and camping season. Check out our Hiking 101, Best Camping Stoves and Best Tent Guides for more.
Even with relatively mild nighttime temperatures, sleeping directly on the ground can take a surprising amount of body heat away and chill you. The Xlite is my favorite sleeping pad for backcountry adventures and alpine climbing adventures. It weighs a pound or less (depending on size), provides plenty of warmth under a sleeping bag, and rolls up in a very compact fabric tube. Mine has lived for five years without any visible clothing.
For overnight camping and backpacking, it’s a good idea to bring a very small roll of towels or two. They double as quick ways to clean up condensation and drips from tents and packs, dry them off after a rain shower, or take a hot pot lid off a camp stove. Sea to Summit does some of the best. Synthetic terry cloth soaks up a lot of liquid and dries quickly.
The Colorado-based company is one of our favorite tent makers. Although typically expensive, it offers quality materials and thoughtful features such as (in this case) eight interior pockets. The Big House’s vertical walls, double doors and 83 square feet (7.7 square meters) make it a luxurious home away from home. There is also a large 4-person house for sale for $300.
Filtering water for an entire group is time-consuming and tedious when using a small personal water filter. Take the muscle work out of getting fresh water by letting gravity do the work for you. Just fill the dirty water bag with 4 liters of river or creek water, connect it to the filter and clean water bag, hang it from the branch and stand back. It takes about four minutes to get clean water. Separating dirty and clean water into separate bags reduces the risk of contamination – a nice touch.
Patagonia clothing
Patagonia is known affectionately for its traditionally high-priced Patagucci – although I’d argue that it’s typically worth the price. Now, with so many great Patagonia clothing items at deep discounts, it’s a no-brainer. While you’re here, check out our best base layering guide and how to layer outerwear.
Usually, I refer my folks to the REI Co-op 650 Down Jacket when someone asks me for a recommendation for a nice, warm jacket around $100, but Patagonia’s excellent Nano Puff is on sale for an extra tick. Add this to the list (if you act by February 8th). 60 grams of synthetic PrimaLoft Gold insulation is packed in a lightweight, 10-ounce body and is a trim size you can layer under a waterproof layer. Only the women’s size is on sale and in a few colors.
Women’s size, Men’s size
I’m a big believer in the value of a synthetic shirt for outdoor activities. Cotton takes forever to get wet from sweat, but these 100 percent polyester shirts dry quickly. I also use Capelin shirts for climbing because they have enough stretch to allow for big moves on the wall without restricting movement. They’re quick-drying so they can double as a workout shirt at the gym, and hey, they can also triple as cute shirts around town.
Women’s size, Men’s Size ($119)
Retro, 1970s style fleece is back. Forget the carpet-like fleece that hit the malls in the 90s and 2000s. This high quality fleece jacket is one of the softest and most comfortable fleeces on the market. Made from 100 percent recycled polyester, it works as a toasty mid layer or outer layer.
Yard discounts
You cut the grass and cut the weeds. You might as well get out there and enjoy that backyard whenever you can. Whether it’s lounging around or baking pizzas, try something new this year. Senior product reviewer Scott Gilbertson names these his budget picks if you’re looking for affordable binoculars. He’s noticed some chromatic changes, like purple, but overall they’re a solid choice for watching those birds visit backyard feeders and birdhouses.
This is a hammock resting here. Better for lazy backyards and campsites than a night in the woods without a rain cover or mosquito net. I spent a few days on Long Island’s north shore, gently swaying in the summer breeze with a beer and a book. From the hammock fabric to the included hanging strap, the quality was solid and I see no reason to spend more on pricey hammocks. The instructions are easy to understand even for newbies.
Unless you want to install an 800- to 900-degree F pizza oven in your kitchen, your best bet for making an extraordinary pie at home is to buy this outdoor pizza oven. In her review (8/10, WIRED Recommends), Senior Associate Reviews Editor Adrianne Soo notes its compact size and how well it handles metal pans. It heats up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit (260 degrees Celsius) in 15 minutes. This version only runs on wood, although there is a version that runs on wood and propane for $615.
