SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — It is often said that ‘when one door closes another opens’. And for the tens of thousands of tech workers hit by a recent mass strike, experts say the odds lie elsewhere. Efforts are being made to hire high tech talent.
Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others round out the big tech companies that have led the sector in terms of disruptions, taking a series of positions that began last year.
Tens of thousands of tech workers are still looking for new opportunities.
“This wealth of experience and knowledge and up-to-date information is very attractive,” San Jose State University. Engineering professor and technologist Ahmed Banafa said. “Very attractive.”

Banfa said efforts are being made to tap into this growing pool of potential candidates. The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the government’s human resources agency, is coming.
“Certainty, that’s what you get when you work for the government,” Banafa said.
“What I’ve found is, yes, the pay is not comparable to what you had, but you have stability, and you have union and you have protection, and you’re guaranteed to get the raise,” he explained.
ABC7 News reached out to OPM. Director Kiran Ahuja said, “If you’re passionate about making our country better, the public service is the place for you. The federal government works across sectors and industries — whether your interests are in cybersecurity and defense, energy and transportation, or healthcare and banking — there are thousands of jobs in the technology space.” .

The office launched a federal tech portal in mid-January that lists positions, job titles, starting salaries and other important information.
Elsewhere, Germany is seeing recent cuts as a good time to recruit top talent.
“They have an aging population, they have received a lot of immigrants. They want to make sure that their immigration is more acceptable because this is theirs, this is their strength,” said Banafa. “They are the strongest economy in Europe. Therefore, they will be leaders.”
There is no doubt that the massive layoffs have left many in misery. Still, Banfa reminded us that there is great opportunity beyond the obstacles.
“A software engineer is a software engineer whether it’s Google or Ford or the government. So when you think about it, if you’re good at what you do, then you’re the winner,” he added. Because now you have to choose the employer instead of choosing you.
