Houghton, Mich – The Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Teams return to action at the 2023 US Cross Country Ski Championships, Jan. 14 and 15 at the Seely Hills Super Tour/CCSA Invitational in Cable, Wisconsin.
On Saturday, the Huskies will compete in the longest distance race of the season with a 32-kilometer mass start at 9:30 a.m., while the classic run will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday.

“We had a great week,” said head coach Tom Monahan Smith. “Especially when you have four days of racing, it’s very challenging to have a high performance day every day, but overall we had strong races, especially the first and last day of racing.”
The Huskies had an amazing week at the American Cross Country Ski Championships hosted by Tech Trails. Skylar Patten highlighted the first day with a bronze finish on the US national podium in the men’s freestyle 10km.
The first day of competition was the CCSA Invitational, in which the Huskies earned another combined team victory. In the women’s race, Annabelle Needham, Henriette Semb and Olivia Lavigne went 1-2-3, and the stage was all black and gold.
Patton joined Colin Freed in taking gold and silver respectively.
On the final day, Adam Witkowski finished eighth in the men’s freestyle race, setting the fastest time of the day among 161 athletes, and the Huskies’ good times continued.
Needham finished 16th overall but earned selection for the U23 World Championships after finishing in the top three of the U23 field.
Additionally, freshman Kat Stow completed the USA Junior National podium with a bronze finish, finishing 24th in the women’s freestyle.
In the men’s freestyle race, Wes Campbell and Jasper Johnston were among the leaders in the field, with Campbell finishing fifth after finishing 12th in the junior heat. Johnston finished fifth in the second semi-final heat.
“We’re really focused on having fun in a strong nationally-competitive field and embracing the new race experience and competing in something different that should be exciting for the student-athletes,” added Monahan Smith.
