A further R60m was spent upgrading the company’s Malmesbury Mill, which is the only source of the special sterile wheat needed to produce Wit-Bix. The expansion of the mill allows for a number of years of wheat supply and ensures easy process control in the Weet-Bix brewing process.

PepsiCo’s acquisition of Pioneer Foods in 2020 was approved by the Competition Tribunal on the basis of several public interest covenants. Investments in Weet-Bix’s value chain improvements will form part of a committed R6.5bn capital expenditure investment.

Top selling breakfast cereal

Wet-Bix was first introduced in South Africa in 1930 and is still made today using the same recipe.

Renewable energy improvements

In addition to the new production line, the Wit-Bix facility is equipped with solar panels, and “from this facility alone, we have the capacity to generate 1.8 million kilowatts of electricity annually. By 2030, we plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 75 percent from 2015 baselines, and This milestone brings us one step closer, explains Matsheka.
