They all say They want to travel in time. Sounds cool, right? Maybe go back 20 billion years to when it all started, or fast forward until we live in cities on the moon. Time travel fantasies often focus on traveling forward or backward, but what about staying put? What if you are stuck in a time loop? What if you have to shoot your way out?
Deathloop From Arcane Leon seeks to answer this question with a mix of clever mechanics, wicked guns and pulp noir bravado. Out now on Xbox Game Pass starting September 20th, it’s arguably one of the best travel games ever, as it explores the ways we use time rather than simply exploring what time can take us.
Deathloop It’s more. Groundhog Day from Back to the future. It follows the story of Colt Van, a gruff and toss-up gunman trapped in a 24-hour loop on Blackriff Island. The island hosted the AEON program, an endless party using the timeline and a strange type of immortal. Colt must eliminate members of the AEON program known as the Visionaries in one day to break free from the loop. Unlike most visionaries, Colt can retain his memories from day to day which gives him a great advantage. Apart from that, he has a problem of forgetfulness. Colt is figuring out who he is as much as he is figuring out how to escape.
There is one problem: Juliana. She is the head of security and will be involved in erasing the memory of Colt’s defenses over time. This means she has all the guards and gans guarding Colt every day. She’ll even track you down herself, leading to some amazing battles at random times throughout your lives. She can’t use a Colt radio to talk shit and play mind games. Death is not an escape. When you die, you wake up on the beach and have to do it all over again.
All of this sets the stage for one of the most unique and exciting games in recent memory. Taking out visionaries isn’t as simple as chasing a waypoint on a map and shooting your way through. They are all developed characters with their own motivations and secrets. You’ll spend a lot of time exploring and observing things on Blackriff Island to figure out where and how to get your revenge. Stealth is crucial, as are the special powers you gain with each successful kill.
Have you ever played Arcana? He was humiliated series, then this should be familiar territory for you. You gain powers that allow you to teleport enemies to take them down one to destroy them all, delay time, and (my favorite) psychically link them. Combine this with some excellent guns and there’s plenty of action to fill your days.
All this action and plot is wrapped up in some unique cool charm. Deathloop Far from a sci-fi future, the backstory leads you to expect. Think James Bond movies. And even if you think playing the same places over and over again will get boring, there are always more mysteries to solve and more layered puzzles to discover.
Half the game is figuring out how to get all the visionaries out, the other half is actually pulling it off. That’s what makes a good time travel game. Instead of focusing on changing the past, it immerses you in the present. Deathloop It’s a game about untapped potential in the here and now, and one that needs to be played ASAP.
