August air travel ticket is sold more than twice a year

The Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC) today released its latest data for August 2022, which shows that air ticket sales through ARC-accredited travel agencies were $7.3 billion last month, a 127 percent increase over the same period last year.

Also in August, the average round-trip price for a US domestic flight fell for the third month in a row to $526. While the average price of an airline ticket is down five percent from July 2022, it’s still up 32 percent from August 2021.

August 2022 Month-to-Month Results:

– Total sales increased by six percent.

– Total passenger trips increased by nine percent.

— US domestic travel sales increased 11 percent.

– International travel sales increased by five percent.

Steve Solomon, ARC’s chief commercial officer, said: “Travellers have responded to the decline in air travel by buying up airline tickets. “Vacation air ticket sales were above pre-pandemic levels throughout August, with online travel agencies and corporate-focused travel agencies showing modest gains.”

ARC’s paid passenger air travel sales grew 43% year-on-year from 15.2 million in August 2021 to 21.7 million in August 2022. Sales of international trips grew 74 percent to 7.4 million.

Meanwhile, sales of electronic miscellaneous documents (EMDs)—paying for products and services such as seat upgrades, baggage checks, paying for unaccompanied minors and pets, etc.—increased 116 percent to $13.8 million compared to last year. And EMD transactions have grown. 92 percent to 248,821 over the same period.
