‘SLAY’ exposes the use of animal skin in fashion

A new feature documentary, SlayIt is set to investigate the deadly relationship between the fashion industry and animal skin, exposing the unethical practices that many brands commit on a daily basis.

According to data from the popular brand rating platform Good On You, 68% of today’s brands use some animal products in their stock. For some larger and more profitable products, this figure rises to 91%.

Looking at the industry’s use of leather, wool and fur, filmmaker Rebecca Cappelli uses investigative footage shot over three years following the industry’s largest supply chain and their subsequent impact on the environment. From how tanning pollutes water to unethical use of materials that contribute to deforestation, the documentary looks at the impact on animals at every level.

Alongside her own footage, Cappelli enlists the help of experts and campaigners, including TV personality Lucy Watson, activist Bandana Tewari and founding director of Collective Fashion Justice Emma Håkansson.

“Animal suffering is greenwashed in the fashion industry, those leather industries are destroying the planet and harming people,” Rebecca Cappelli, director and editor of SLAY, said in a press release. “SLAY aims to challenge the stereotype that animal skin is a fabric and open people’s eyes to the dark realities behind fashion’s most sought-after leathers.

Also, looking at the grim reality of the industry and its consequences, Slay It offers a glimmer of hope, sheds light on possible solutions and ways brands can minimize their impact. From animal-free leather made from pineapple leaves to plant-based wool produced by flowers, the documentary highlights the commitment to sustainable options and seeks to encourage brands to do more.
