One of the guiding principles of the annual Burning Man festival is radical self-expression. Many Black Rock townspeople embrace this in the fashion they wear to the event.
A mix of practical essentials and fabulous apparel, you never know what and who you’ll see in the Nevada desert.
Burning Man’s “Doc Team” photographer Jane Hu shared some portraits of those who attended the festival with SFGATE. The art festival took place from August 28th to September 5th in Jerlak, Nevada in the Black Rock Desert.
“I’m always inspired by what people are willing to bring out there, whether it’s fashion or art,” Hu explains. “It blows my mind what people can accomplish.”

This year, too, it was very difficult for the festival goers to show off their beach fashions in the hours of dust storms and high temperatures.
“People are very beautiful, interesting, creative in their clothes,” says Hu. “I wish I had captured more than I could. I wish I could spend days just following people around and taking pictures of them. Because I’m always like, ‘Who are you? How did you manage to do all this? And can you keep yourself clean and clean your clothes afterwards?
