Karen Cheng is one of many innovators who use AI as part of their idea generation process. Her latest Fashion design project (Opens in a new tab) It combines a few different AI models to achieve a smooth and automated costume-changing catwalk video, and is a true testament to how AI can benefit artists in surprising ways.
Her process involves first using Dall-E 2 to create overall patterns on top of some verticals. By marking the intended design area with a brush and feeding a brief for each type of clothing, namely white overalls, Cheng was able to achieve the most interestingly created outfits. She did a good job of matching the lighting, though she had to filter out some pretty bad patterns in the “MC Escher-inspired dress” below.
So, AI still doesn’t exist. Perfect For idea generation, but finally got there.
After the first generation stage, Cheng ran the frames through EbSynth (Opens in a new tab) To make it work with video and then using Depth-Aware Video Frame Interpolation software (DAIN (Opens in a new tab)) to smooth the frames.
The final video turned out amazingly well, and matches Cheng’s professional level with Paul Trillo and Shima Golden’s amazing sci-fi design project. References later in the tweet (Opens in a new tab).
As usual, the comments were filled with the expected flurry of AI concerns, with fears that robots will displace humans and put them out of creative jobs. A serious matter I must confess is what I ordered myself for a short while.
When I spoke to David Holmes, the founder of Midjourney AI, the image that generates the Discord bot (Opens in a new tab)He had some pretty positive views on how the advancement of AI is impacting innovation:
“When we invent cars and suddenly cars can go faster than we can walk, we didn’t cut off our legs, you know. And there are still experts who move things,” he said.
