Iris and Wool Emily Riggs How fashion helped her through difficult times

What are three essential items in your wardrobe? Woolen sweaters, winter coats and linen maxi dresses for summer.

Is there anything that goes into jewelry? Apart from my own wedding and engagement rings, I wear my mother’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring and paspali pearl and sandalwood bracelet.

Can you remember your favorite clothes as a child? Five year old blue smoky dress. It was made by my grandma and I can’t wait for my daughter to wear it.

And your worst fashion mistake? I cringe when I think of the Adidas Snap pants I wore when I was 12.

What was your first fashion moment? Everyone has a sliding door moment; Mine was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on my 10th birthday. My mother was battling breast cancer so I knew what that meant. My mom and I fought cancer together but mom died a year later. She was only 43. It was horrible; I lost my mother and I was so sick I couldn’t leave my bed. I was often mistaken for a boy because I wore my hair down, which shattered my confidence. That’s when I turned to fashion as a creative outlet and for people to see past my pain. I didn’t always nail it — hello, snap pants — but what a treat it was when someone complimented me on my outfit.

What’s on your fashion wish list? Hermes dress saddle.

Is there anything you would never wear? Dr. Martens boots.

What shoes do you wear most often? Nike sneakers. I run in the morning; They last all day so I can run after my kids.

Do you have a favorite current fashion trend? I love how people want to shop with a brand’s history, are realizing the benefits of wearing natural fibers and that traceability is becoming a factor in people’s consumer decisions.

Who is your favorite fashion icon? Olivia Palermo is always on point; I love how you mix and match prints and bright colors. And I love Kate Middleton’s classic and glamorous style.

What do you wear on a typical workday? My wardrobe consists of simple everyday pieces – it might be a Camilla & Marc full skirt dress and one of our Chloe horse print slides.

And what’s your favorite off-duty, casual Sunday look? Zara high waisted jeans, pullover and coat.
