RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk with Jared Land

[ad_1]

It’s been a few weeks since pre-orders started and yesterday the accompanying RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk was released on the RED Youtube channel. RED CEO Jared Land, as well as Clay Reed, Jonathan Petts and James Lucarelli gave a brief overview of RED’s latest camera system, ideal for studio setups and high-end productions. Let’s dive in.

The RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk got off to a great start with the reel, some introductory notes and then most importantly a short tour with director Zack Snyder who used the camera in his new film. After that, the RED team gave an overview of the cameras’ overall capabilities, a deep dive into the built-in ND system and accessories, and finally a Q&A that answered user questions.

Built-in NDs

The specifications of the cameras have been out for a while, so there’s nothing particularly new here. However, the RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk provided some interesting insights into the workings of the built-in electronic ND system. RED founder Jared Land highlighted that RED has been working on this system for a long time (and publicly stated that they were late to the party before). The clear filter is mechanically changed for an ND filter. There are three buttons on the camera body to control it: “UP”, “DOWN” and “ND/CLR”. You can set increments for the “UP” and “DOWN” buttons to 1/3 stop, 1/4 stop or 1 stop via the RED Control app. Turning ND on or off will return you to the previously used magnification. You can dial the exact increment you want using the app. Going back to the aforementioned Zack Snyder production tour, the director mentioned that NDs will be used extensively in the current film being shot.

We are always open! It is a fixed ND driver.

Accessories

Moving on to the parts section of the RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk, the team discussed the camera’s dual and high-voltage capabilities, using specially developed batteries. The camera looks just as traditional as you’d expect from such a studio-focused camera, with plenty of power outlets and body-mounting options as well as wraps.

RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk – Q&A

A large portion of the RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk was taken up by the Q&A segment. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting questions answered.

Self-focusing Of course, we have something new, as the camera has automatic contrast and phase detection. The fun part of this episode of the RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk, however, is Jared Land’s take on where he sees this going. He’s made it clear that he wants to expand on the camera’s autofocus capabilities, like smart detection and tracking, in comparison to Sony and Canon. But it hasn’t been found yet.

EF-Mount and RF-Mount: Jared Land explained in detail in the RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk Q&A segment that the rear EF-Mount is already under construction. On the subject of the RF-Mount, however, the team had to explain that this would not happen as the ND system takes up too much space.

V-RAPTOR S35 Version: The V-Raptor XL 8k VV version of the S35 has been confirmed again and is said to be under development and testing. The team at the RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk also tried to position that camera in the lineup as a smaller version of the XL, which could be especially useful for production shots, because of its high DOF.

If you want to go into more detail about the camera or consider yourself a RED fan, the Q&A section of the RED V-RAPTOR XL Tech Talk (embedded above) is especially recommended. Alternatively, you can visit RED’s website here.

What do you think about Tech Talk? Did you find the answers here interesting? Are you looking forward to using the camera to shoot? Let us know in the comments!
