Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been diagnosed with Covid-19 and has canceled a planned trip while he recovers.
Kishida developed a mild fever and cough late Saturday, and a PCR test for the coronavirus was positive, according to Prime Minister’s Office Public Affairs Minister Noriyuki Shikata.
Prime Minister Kishida told The Associated Press on Sunday that he is in self-isolation at his residence.
The 65-year-old prime minister was on summer vacation last week and is scheduled to return to work on Monday. It is unclear where and how it was contaminated.
Kishida will not attend the African Development Conference in Tunisia later this month in person, but will participate online. He also extended his trip to the Middle East.
Recently, coronavirus infections have been on the rise in Japan, even though most people, including Kishida, have been vaccinated.
Other world leaders have recovered from Covid-19, including US President Joe Biden.
