GREAT FALLS – Chad Taylor is a graphic designer, and was most recently working as a designer for Benefis Health System – but now he’s breaking new ground by opening Digital Carman at 410 Central Avenue in Great Falls. The business opened in late July and plans to hold a grand opening event on August 20.
“I clearly believe in karma, which is why I named my company Digital Karma,” Taylor says. “What goes around comes around and life will be good to you. That’s the kind of mantra I like to live by.”
“Finally, I’ve been given the opportunity to do the tattooing that I’ve been wanting to do for 20 years,” explains Taylor. “Then I put my foot on the gas and went for it.”
As for the location: “It’s a secure building so I don’t have some of the amenities, maybe not as desirable, you know street stuff,” Taylor said.
For Taylor, the position brings him full circle. “I worked in this building right out of high school, maybe 1998 or ’99. In 1998 or 99 It was very different, then his presence just happened. We did the street logo and vinyl graphics through my sign shop. I looked at the place and followed it up and said, wow, this is a great place for a tattoo shop.
Chad calls his studio an approachable, upscale, family-friendly shop.
“People want this. In Great Falls, I’ve been told by a lot of people that they want something different,” Taylor said. “Nothing from the other shops, I’ve been tattooed at most shops in Great Falls in my life so I have a lot of respect for them. But they want something a little different.” And that’s what I want to offer.

While he’s new to skin-painting, he thinks his longtime free-lance design background will serve him well. “This gives me a background to do things that are a little bit different than a lot of traditional tattoo studios because I can use my design background to digitally design tattoos and come up with some neat stuff,” Taylor said.
Currently, Chad is the only artist on board. He hopes to add more, including the opportunity to become a traveling artist. He continues to run a successful signage business called CMC Signs with two business partners.
“I also do a lot of community work and the police department at the sign shop. That was a big push. We do vehicle graphics and decals and things like that for the sheriff’s office.”
He’s new to the tattoo game so he thinks his prices are comparable.
So far, he has no regrets about the new job.
“When you’re going into something to open your own business and push it, it’s scary not having the complete unknown,” Taylor said. But it’s kind of liberating where you set your own hours, do your own marketing and sell whatever you can, put yourself out there and make a name for yourself and your family.
