Socorro–The buzz coming from New Mexico Tech’s campus this winter isn’t from bumblebees. It is the voice of the youth and teenagers who are learning various information technology topics at the open computer science base camp.

The camp consists of a week of on-campus learning experiences for seventh and eighth graders the week of July 18-22 and July 25-29 for high school students. Students from across the region have registered for 30 vacancies. Free computer science camps for the first time.
Funding for the camp, which covers Tech dorm stays and meals Sunday through Friday at the Alphabet Student Center, comes from anonymous donors, said Samantha Vigil of the Advancement Office, who serves as project manager for the Buzz Camp initiative. .
“The donors have a special interest in learning about non-traditional education as well as measuring new and innovative ways to teach things,” she said.
Donors covered the cost of hosting tech students who enrolled in a master’s science teaching program for a week in mid-June to learn about Python coding. The teachers also spent time building on what they learned about coding and applications by temporarily preparing for Buzz Camps.
Booth Camp students receive instruction from instructors and Computer Science Department faculty and participate in hands-on activities, culminating in a final project at the end of the week.
“There have been similar camps, but New Mexico Tech is the first to host them as part of the MST program,” Vigil said.
