With CES 2023 over, it’s time to delve deeper into the trends and topics at the world’s biggest tech event, from health to home appliances, smart tech, healthcare, EVs and more.
1. Advanced health gadgets
Wearable gadgets have been more than accessories for listening to music or getting notifications for some time now. Headphones that measure your heart rate are no longer rare and have not been fueled by the Covid-19 pandemic, with many smartwatches and fitness trackers now able to read blood oxygen levels.
Could 2023 be the time to go further? Healthcare devices were a big part of the CES floor this year, so we’ve rounded up some of the best health products on display at the show.
Well-known names in the industry have announced products such as Acer’s eKinekt BD3 exercise desk, a combination exercise and work desk. In addition, JBL’s Endurance Peak 3 headphones, which combine IP68 certification with salt water resistance, can be used during exercise.
Smaller players have also made announcements. For example, Wings launched a device that clipped the U-Scan to a toilet bowl and analyzed urine. Alphabeats is a headband that provides real-time information using EEG sensors to improve concentration through music.
A ring to track the menstrual cycle, a high heel that distributes the impact equally on each foot, and the usual wearable variety—including smartwatches that caught MUO’s attention. Tech is increasingly used to monitor health and improve well-being, which benefits us all.
2. Electric vehicles go to the main part
EVs were the main stars at CES 2023. But in their case, there is no specific technology that can be considered a trend: electric vehicles themselves are trending now. EVs are mainstream, and not just as “for the general public”.
That means one can now find electric motors from luxury car concepts like the color-changing BMW iX to minivans like the VW ID. Buzz is not just something for market buyers, as more and more people are considering an EV purchase.
3. Phones and wearables will gradually improve
It’s been a few years since some truly amazing innovations emerged in the smartphone scene. Aside from flexible screens and ultra-high-definition cameras, things are at a pace of evolution rather than revolution. At CES 2023, at least, this continues. CES isn’t known for major announcements in the category (the ticket usually goes to Mobile World Congress, held in late February each year). Still, producers often take some news to the show floor.
Lenovo made the biggest splash, launching the ThinkPhone by Motorola. While not too different from the late 2022 flagships, it promises deeper integration with Lenovo’s ThinkPad family of laptops.
Next up is the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. It has decent (though not amazing) specs for the price, but its biggest feature is the manufacturer’s pioneering mobile design language.
Finally, TCL has announced its 2023 smartphone lineup with three new devices. All three—the 40R 5G, 40 SE, and 408—have entry-level CPUs and RAM, but take it a step further with NXTVISION screen technology and a 50MP main camera.
Actual advancements in smartphones are limited by the ongoing advancements in technology. For example, both Qualcomm and Bullitt Group (known for its CAT smartphones and Motorola’s Rugged Defy phones) have marketed satellite-connected smartphones. Qualcomm partnered with Iridium for low-Earth orbit coverage, while Bullitt partnered with Skylo to enable geostationary constellation communications from multiple vendors.
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which is responsible for the Qi charging standard, also had an announcement – and one inspired by Apple. The controller includes a magnetic power profile for the Qi2 version, called MagSafe, as seen on iPhones from 2020.
Wearables—above all health-related from the first class—got some love at CES 2023, too.
TCL has announced the RayNeo X2 augmented-reality glasses that feature micro-LED displays on the lenses, speakers on each leg, and a 16MP camera. Sony’s PSVR2, meanwhile, introduced its long-awaited virtual reality headset with compatible hand controls.
Several headphones were also announced at CES 2023. For example, JBL’s Tour Pro 2 and Poly’s Voyager Free 6 have a touchscreen charger, Urbanista’s Phoenix has a solar panel instead, and Sennheiser has added hearing aid functionality to the Conversation Clear Plus.
4. AI will be more brilliant
A CES 2023 lineup isn’t in ChatGPT’s job description, but it certainly could be. Artificial Intelligence was definitely a buzzword that many exhibitors couldn’t keep off their lips.
The aforementioned TCL line of smartphones uses it to enhance photos while Govi uses it to sync smart home lights with on-screen gaming content in the AI Gaming Sync Box Kit.
Elsewhere, Truekinetix is implementing AI-powered balance pedals on its smart exercise bike, and Citizen is using AI to deliver health insights to its CZ Smartwatch.
Nothing even comes close to Lenovo’s Legion family of gaming laptops. All four models are equipped with a dedicated AI processor to optimize performance. It increases the speed of fans, limits the TDP transferred to the CPU and GPU and makes the battery last longer.
5. Big players bet on smart houses
At CES 2023, the area receiving the most attention from major manufacturers is likely to be smart home appliances. Samsung, LG, Philips, NanoLeaf and GE all had something to show.
LG announced no less than three lines of appliances: Minimalist, the updated Signature and the upgradeable ThinQ UP, while Samsung brought some new things to the Bespoke line, including a 32-inch touchscreen refrigerator.
Another commonly heard word was matter. The new smart home standard was widely adopted at CES 2023 with compatible products from Samsung, GE, Naoleaf, Yeelight and Philips. Many have also announced updates to existing devices to support Matter, such as Yeelight releasing Matter support for its Yeelight Pro range.
6. High refresh rate gaming monitors and high power laptops
In gaming, a fair share of manufacturers announced products at CES 2023, spanning desktops, laptops, monitors and peripherals. Almost all computers feature the latest offerings from Intel, AMD, or Nvidia, and most of them have crazy-high refresh rates.
Apparently, the bottom end for gaming laptop monitors is now at 120Hz. Dell’s entry-level G family of gaming laptops goes up from there. Acer starts at 144Hz for the Nitro and 250Hz for the Predator series. Alienware’s M16 and M18 can go up to 480Hz—but at the cost of resolution, the fastest refresh display options are FHD. Razer’s Blade line will cap at 240Hz for QHD.
For regulators, things get even worse.
LG has chosen a moderate route with the UltraGear pair: 240Hz—but OLED and 27″ QHD, with a 45″ curved WQHD option.
Asus has similar offerings to LG in terms of size, technology and refresh rates. However, its ROG sub-brand has gone a little further by pushing 540Hz gaming monitors, with Dell’s gaming division promising to launch a 500Hz gaming monitor later in 2023.
Samsung, while not playing the refresh rate game, had some interesting offerings. The Odyssey Neo G9 has a 57-inch curved screen with a 32:9 aspect ratio and dual-4K (7.680 x 2.160) resolution. The Odyssey OLED G9 is smaller at 49 inches and bumps the resolution to dual-QHD but offers true blacks for a reason. Quantum dot OLED panel. Both refresh at 240Hz.
7. TVs and monitors for all preferences
If we talk about panels, there are also products for those who do not need high renovation costs.
Samsung’s Viewfinity S9, aimed at creative professionals, includes a color calibration engine and covers 99% of the DCI-P3 gamut. Its TV offers up to 140 inches in size and 8K resolution, with Matter support and included social features.
LG decided to try a different approach. The signature OLED M TV does away with cables, with an AV box that transmits 4K at 120 Hz wirelessly to the panel. The only wire behind the display is the power cord.
Roku has announced its own line of TVs, surprising everyone. For the company, the main strategy for 2023 will be relying on third parties to reach consumers’ living rooms, it seems.
A little further away from the end customer are Samsung’s concept panels. The Flex line consists of three displays: one that bends and rotates, aimed at tablets, and two removable screens for laptops. There was also a 2,000-nit HDR screen for smartphones, which should arrive in the coming months.
8. Good old computers learn new tricks
Among the many unique trends, what can be left for the familiar and beloved computer form? A lot, actually.
First, there’s a recurring trend of Chromebooks versus entry-level Windows laptops — and some mid-range ones, too. Asus has announced a new Vibe offering, the first to focus on cloud gaming, complete with RGB lighting. HP has launched the ChromeOS version of its Dragonfly Pro laptop. Acer even showed off a Chromebox designed to attach to the back of a monitor.
Another consistent evolution is ultra-thin laptops. Sacrificing a bit of performance for greater portability, laptops are getting smaller and smaller and packing longer-lasting, stronger batteries every year. LG announced Gram Ultraslim at CES 2023, it is 10.99mm thick and weighs 998 grams. Sony Vaio joins the party with the SX14, along with the HP and Dragonfly G4, Asus with the ExpertBook B9 and Acer’s Swift Go line.
Many of these offer OLED screens by default or as upgrades. These days, true black display panels are becoming more common for premium and even mid-range laptops.
Finally, Lenovo has announced the Yoga Book 9i, a dual-screen laptop from Microsoft, the successor to the Surface Neo (pictured above). The design differs from foldable devices like Asus’ ZenBook 17 Fold or Lenovo’s own ThinkPad X1 Fold, opting instead for two 13.3-inch screens. It does come with a detachable Bluetooth keyboard, though, and made our list of the best laptops at CES 2023.
CES will continue fuel innovation in 2023
For tech geeks all over the world, CES is always a great way to start a new year. Some device categories, such as smart watches or cell phones, may seem stagnant. Others, such as AI and health technology, will grow.
In the next few months, many of the ideas presented at the event will be perfected, and some will be discarded. What we can be sure of is this: if anyone believes something can be solved using technology, it will end up on the CES floor.
