Apple announced the new iPhone 14 series during the company’s September 7 event, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The iPhone 14 series marks the biggest change in 2020 since the iPhone 12 series. There’s a new big iPhone that costs less than $1,000, and the iPhone 14 Pros come with several big improvements in performance, camera systems, and design. Apple unveiled the Dynamic Island and Always-On displays in Pros, which give users new ways to interact with their phones.
The iPhone 14 isn’t all that different from the iPhone 13, which makes the older model a better buy. The iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are very compelling options, and we’ve listed six top reasons why you should consider them.
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the most powerful iPhones yet.
iPhone 14 Pro models run Apple’s new A16 Bionic processor, which not only delivers the best performance from an iPhone to date, but also contributes to the quality of photos and videos.
Only the iPhone 14 Pro models will get the A16 Bionic, while the regular iPhone 14 models will continue to use the A15 Bionic introduced in the iPhone 13 series. We won’t know the performance gap between the A16 Bionic and the A15 Bionic until we run benchmark tests, but the A16 Bionic is likely to outperform the A15 Bionic.
The iPhone 14 series will come with camera upgrades, especially the Pro models
Apple says the iPhone 14 series’ medium-to-low-light performance is two to three times better than the iPhone 13 series’ thanks to the new camera system’s “photonic engine.” This means more visible details in dark areas and bright colors.
The iPhone 14 Pro cameras have received the biggest upgrade. There’s now a 48-megapixel main camera — a big jump from the iPhone 13 Pro’s 12 megapixels. This increase in quality means you can make larger prints or zoom in or crop an image without compromising image quality. It also allows for a new 2x zoom. Apple also says the sensor has been redesigned to capture more light, resulting in even better image quality.
The real meat of the 48-megapixel camera upgrade is the ProRAW mode for those who want to use it on their iPhones. With ProRAW, you can take 48 megapixel uncompressed photos, which retain more detail and reduce noise, especially when you’re shooting a photo. The extra pixels in ProRAW mean you can crop a photo while retaining more detail than a 12-megapixel camera.
Apple has added a new video stabilization feature called Action Mode, which helps reduce jerking motion while recording video while running.
Dynamic Island is a redesigned level, and has new functionality.
The iPhone X-era notch that houses the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors has been replaced by a small pill-shaped cutout that Apple calls the Dynamic Island. This new feature is only available in Pro models.
Unlike the notch that takes up space at the top of the screen, the Dynamic Island acts as a camera/sensor and secondary display that displays notifications and basic information, such as timer progress, music album art, and survey questions. And it can be “expanded” in size depending on what information is displayed. This little trick is done by software, but it’s useful because now you can control multimedia and calls from Dynamic Island without leaving what you’re doing on your phone.
As with the overall design, the borders around the iPhone 14 Pro screen are also slimmed down for a smoother look.
“Always On” displays to tell the time and view widgets without touching the screen or unlocking the phone.
The iPhone 14 Pro models are always-on iPhones, dimmed when your phone is locked, but basic information like the clock and widgets are always visible. Like the Dynamic Island, this screen feature gives users a new convenient hands-free way to interact with the device. It eliminates the need to tap your phone’s screen to wake it up, just in time for a quick glance or a widget. Even when dimmed, the display can preserve your background colors beyond the always-on displays on existing Android phones.
The larger iPhone 14 models have longer battery life than the previous iPhone.
Based on the specs, the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max have the longest battery life of any iPhone.
Apple claims the iPhone 14 Plus can play up to 26 hours of video stored on the phone, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max can play up to 29 hours. As for video streaming, the iPhone 14 Plus battery lasts up to 20 hours and the iPhone 14 Pro Max up to 25 hours.
While actual usage may vary, these numbers represent a significant increase over the phones’ predecessors.
The iPhone 14 Plus offers consumers a larger screen option for less than $1,000
Before introducing the Pro models, Apple introduced the Plus option, which finally appeared in the iPhone 8. Apple has now brought it to the iPhone 14, giving people a bigger screen for less than $1,000.
The iPhone 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen — the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max — but costs $200 less, at $899. It’s arguably something Apple should have done years ago, limiting the Pro Max iPhone models to the larger iPhone experience you can afford.
In addition to a larger display and longer battery life, the iPhone 14 Plus shares the same internal specs as the iPhone 14.
