Karak (Jordan) (FBC) Long before whiteboards, beacons, and laptops were introduced into modern school classrooms, teachers wore a humble, dusty, and sometimes cruel blackboard – a material that created Jordan’s business success story.

He recalls that a chemical engineer, Salah Aloqbi, sat down on a bus in 1995 to come up with an idea to start his own company. After more than two decades, it has 150 employees and will be sent to more than 100 countries.

Chalk, white, soft limestone, when the shells of small sea creatures were crushed to the sea several years ago – and the landlocked Middle East country Jordan was given a large collection.

Allokbi, now 49, the founder of Jordan Chalk Manufacturing Company, recalls that “it was a game-changing idea.”

“On my way back from work at the Jordan Carbonate Company, I heard a radio interview that the calcium carbonate produced by the company will be used in various industries in Jordan except for the choke industry.”

In addition to calcium carbonate, Alokbi pondered how to make the blackboard, which has been completely imported, to add value to the calcium carbonate used to produce white cement, to keep the soil acidic and to make the toothpaste more perishable.

Seven years later, in the province of Karak, south of Aman, he started and experimented with a small factory with two rooms and only five workers – first grinding what was drilled in a meat grinder.

But because the limestone we produced at that time was not used around the world, we moved to produce dust-free medical lime, ”he said, referring to large particles based on carbonate.

After 2,149 attempts, the trader boasted that he had hit the right formula for the dust-free lime, creating a “very strong export opportunity” and now the company produces 10 billion pieces a year.

Jordan has an endless supply of raw materials, and the Ministry of Energy and Minerals estimates the country’s “over 1.3 billion metric tons of limestone.”

Limestone is a common calcium carbonate CaCO3, the main element of lime.

Examining hundreds of cartons destined for Britain and Germany, Mali and Morocco, he said: “It comes to mind that this is an outdated product, but the reality is that we are struggling to meet the greatest demand.”

The limestone pieces are colorful and are used for art and play around the world.

The company is the only manufacturer of lime wood in the country, producing colorful crane and modeling tiles.

The number of unemployed people in the 7,500-square-meter company today has risen to 25 percent over the past year, which is similar to the poverty rate.

“Most of us are from villages in the state of Karak,” said Sundus Majali, a 28-year-old worker. “More than half of the staff are women.”

At first, it was difficult to allow parents to work for women … but today they have no problem with that, especially since the factory is safe, unlike other workplaces. “

“The factory created jobs when life was difficult,” says Ala Alokbi, a 33-year-old co-worker.
