Mildred Kornman, one of the last people to appear in silent films of the silent era, died on August 19 at 97, according to longtime friend Robert Satterfield.
Kornman appeared in more than 20 “Our Gang” comedy shorts from 1926-1935 as the female survivor and third-to-last survivor of the silents.
The only two living people credited with appearing in a silent film are Gary Watson (who was an infant) and Donnie “Beazer” Smith.
Post-“Our Gang” Cornman appeared in twelve features from 1937-1962, was a rare surviving actor who worked with Laurel and Hardy, and became an in-demand high fashion model in the ’40s. moniker Ricky VanDusen, gracing the covers of Bazaar and Vogue and posing as Irving Penn.
Kornman has been a frequent presence at fan conventions over the years, where she was popular. In the year In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, she commented, “Everything, as you get older, becomes more popular.”
In the year Born July 10, 1925, Kornman was the younger sister of “Our Gang” star Mary Kornman. They were the daughters of current photographer Eugene Kornman, who worked for silent star Harold Lloyd.
She made her screen debut at the age of 1 month in “The Thundering Fleas” (1926) 100 years before the passing, but gained more attention with the 1926-1928 regularity of “Our Gang”. Her other credits in the series from 1930 were for additional work.
After her acting and modeling career ended, Kornman took over her father’s photography business.
