As it turns out, VR was still a bit too expensive and perhaps too remote to dominate the gaming world. But now everyone is about vice versa, there is a spotlight on virtual reality. There are new apps and games, new hardware and even new use cases.

Our top pick, the Meta Quest 2 (née Oculus), is now as useful a work tool as it is for fun. But things are still up in the air as Meta announced a price hike for Quest 2, an unprecedented move that doesn’t speak well for confidence in the platform. Regardless, getting into VR is an exciting time.

Wired or Wireless VR?

Before we dive in, there’s one question you need to answer: Do you want connected or wireless headphones? Tethered VR gives you more graphical details than those connected to a PC. The problem is you, well. It is connected to PC. There’s no getting around the fact that cables are a pain to deal with, especially when you can’t see them. You too may stumble upon them at some point. But if you’re looking for the absolute best online graphics, and you’ve already splurged for a big gaming PC or laptop, then you’ll want to stick with it.

For most people, myself included, it’s a much better option than wireless VR. It’s more convenient, you don’t have to worry about getting tangled in your own cables, and it’s completely portable. You can bring a VR headset like this into any room at home without having to lug around a PC. Also, in the case of Meta Quest 2, you can Plug it into a PC if you need the extra graphics horsepower.
