Elizabeth Woolridge Grant — aka Lana Del Slay, aka Lana Del Rey — has been taking over the charts ever since her deep, sultry, haunting voice on “Video Games.” Eight albums later, she remains one of the most intriguing figures to emerge from America, embodying the all-American girl-next-door but with a dark, sensual and sinister edge.
So it’s no wonder we all think Lana Del Rey is a Gemini, especially with the chaotic way she transforms fashion. One moment she’s in daisy dukes and tweezer tees, the next an ethereal bohemian mini dress. Once she’s an icon of 2010s indie sleaze, she’s in her goth moment. But she’s not a Gemini, she’s a Cancer, and that makes sense, given the sad-girl energy she brings to all of her visual styles.
As her fifth studio album, Desire of lifeIt’s been five years since he brought us the hit “Love,” and we’re taking a look at the singer’s best style moments. From Sky Regalia to Gucci Girl in Music Videos and the Met Gala.
Born To Die music video, 2012
After releasing her debut single “Video Games” and a retro, super-cool 8-style music video, Lana went more cinematic for her follow-up look. Lana’s dramatic “Born to Die” voice-over scenes on a throne in a Romanian chapel, flanked by tigers and wearing an angelic white Antonio Berardi SS11 gown with a cutout above her bust and a blue flower crown. Later, for moments of walking on the wild side, she dressed all-American in cut-off jean shorts, red hi-tops and a white leather jacket over pink underwear. It wouldn’t be her most American outfit though…
By Ride music video, 2012
In the 10-minute music video for the song “Ride”, Lana had an all-American outfit. As the mocked and angry “artist” in a short film about prostitution, violence and the American dream, she wears a tattered acid-wash denim jacket, short shorts and a Buttweezer beer tee. If this happens in 2022, that t-shirt will say 100% Bussywiser and we will be eternally grateful that this is not the case.

At the Isle of Wight Festival, 2012
In the year In 2012, Lana was in her Beehive period. The Lovebox singer was pictured as he performed the UK festival circuit, wearing a pair of heeled white trainers, a blush shirt dress and a loose camo shirt jacket. She brought the latter statement piece back for a spin at the White White Festival, covering her previous Lip Tee and Daisy Duke. She finished off her look with a pair of beige open-toe booties with mud-stained heels. Truly an early 2010s outfit. Stick a pair of fake Ray Bans and a High Street x High Fashion Kolb scarf around her neck and she could be the face of American Apparel.

Milan Fashion Week, 2013
There was a disc to combine with vinyl bandages, side shunts and emergency cut clamps. Sitting front row at the show was Lana, sporting a seriously stunning new look that was equal parts shocking and sexy. Her indie slang and boho aesthetic has been transformed for her vamp era – a black mini dress with lace sleeves and detailing, vinyl boots, blood red lipstick and nail polish and new colored nails. We call that region.

At the Met Gala, 2018
The Met Gala 2018 is arguably the most prestigious Met Gala in history. Remember Rihanna’s Pope look? Zendaya’s Joan of Arc? Is Ariana Grande wearing the Sistine Chapel ceiling? Well, add to the list Lana who arrived at the event wearing a custom gown from the Italian house alongside the rest of the Gucci team (Jared Leto and Alessandro Michele). Wearing medieval regalia, she looked furious, with a white robe over a lace skirt (that looked like the blinds on your grandmother’s windows) with a heart of gold in the middle of her chest pierced by six swords. Then there is the diamond halo that sits on top of her head with amazing ombre feathery wings coming out of it.
In Gucci Forever Guilty Movie, 2019
Alessandro Michele wanted to create a “Hollyweird” themed campaign for Gucci Guilty fragrance and so who better than his muses Jared Leto, Courtney Love and Lana in the trippy film directed by Glen Luchford? Midway through her sixth album, Norman Ficking RockwellLana wore a retro grassy jumpsuit with a double G logo on the belt. Guilty forever Film, bodysuit covered with bright silver chain pendants and stunning jewels. To top it off, Olivia Rodrigo baring her bouffant hair with her 00s-style diamante clips sparkled with the brand’s name.
At a book signing, 2020
LDR’s most famous fashion moment was more of a faux pas, but the witnesses nonetheless. During the outbreak, Lana appeared in a diamante mesh mask to sign her first book of superhero poetry. The internet was quick to jump on the CDC-approved PPE before she took to Twitter to explain that the mask was actually made of plastic. She then performs the moment in the music video for “Chemtrails over the Country Club.” In fact, we stopped. Face masks have become an integral part of our wardrobe, why not pull it off in the most impractical, heavy and sweaty way possible. After all, the epidemic is a few years, but popular fashion seasons live forever.
