Fashion is the name of the game on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 Episode 5.

Challenges of style and construction have humbled even the most seasoned queens. If they don’t have a keen eye for fashion or don’t have the ability to create a look, they can be next off the main stage.

During this type of challenge as a team, it became clear who caused the surprise and confusion.

Jax's Beautiful Nightmare - RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 Episode 5

“House of Fashion” was an easy and breezy round that would have worked better with a quick 1 hour run.

Compared to RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 Episode 4, which felt too rushed, the pace is slowed down a touch better. We’ve got more footage of the queens getting engaged and ready for the runway.

Part of this tone may be due to the Maxi Challenge being just a construction runway.

In previous episodes where this happened, the plot was more focused. No filler or extra scenes crammed in to hit every mark. The journey was more straightforward when they gave us the story.

And while the edit didn’t quite hit all the marks, “Fashion House” was a brighter spot than some of the previous weeks.

Eventually, the walk itself will have to come off as more queens go home. Although the original hour-and-a-half format is still the best approach to RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Lose LaDuca's Beautiful Nightmare - RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 Episode 5

One of the times it didn’t work was during the mini challenge. Why did the Drag Race edit make the challenge so rubbish?!

“Reading is basic!” Mini Challenge is a visual game that returns every season.

We live for every zinger, one-liner, and toast the queens dish out. Sometimes these lines are the funniest jokes that have depth and live on for years.

[In confessional] In Untucked, Marcia tries to turn off my light. She tried to contact me, so I had to let her know she couldn’t deliver. She wasn’t giving.

Lady Isabel Brooks

It was a shame that each of the queens had only one zinger each cut in the edit. Undoubtedly, there must have been a lot of comedy that never got to air. The editing took away from the fans, and it took away from the queens having their moments.

And on the rare occasion that the Queen gets more than one joke, it clearly tells us who wins. Come on, Loosey LaDuca’s got three jokes on the air! She had to win; Her jokes were hilarious, but the editing took away the fun.

The maxi challenge, which showcases fashion houses, was very evenly matched. Each queen gets the spotlight to show off their ensembles, and the edit reveals which queens have better sewing skills than the others.

Plus, we’ve got the return of RuPaul’s Walks!

We missed out on RuPaul criticizing celebrity choices before Snatch Game, which was a glaring hole. However, having the walk-ons back this time has given us back some of the volume we were missing.

RuPaul’s walkthroughs are essential to the flow of the round. The queens got a clue of what RuPaul was thinking. We, as viewers, learn a lot about who can excel and who can fall. And so the tension rose before the runway.

It is necessary for such tests.

Now let’s go to the look of the fashion house!

For Team #1 (House of Kressley), the overall performance of this team consisted of poor costumes and combinations. Mixing dark plaid with leather led the group in different directions, with some queens going for a school theme while others tried a warrior-inspired style.

For example, Robin Fierce’s costume. The embellished skirt and leather shoulder piece was the best of both worlds. Her ensemble was stylish and connected from both sides of her ensemble.

Spice: I feel part of me, I look at her stuff, there are girls who shouldn’t be here.
Lady Isabelle Brooks: Like who?
Spice: I’m not saying but we know who it is. you know what i mean?
Lady Isabelle Brooks: No, girl, say the name. savior
Spice: Pretty obvious.

I love Jax Heathers inspiration, but the theme is done to death in Drag Race. And unfortunately, other queens did it better. A dress that needs to fit better to emphasize the beauty of the 80s.

Anetra’s sexy two-piece ensemble felt unfinished, especially in the bottom half. And the Salina Aesthetics collection had a lot going for it with the comforter cap. I agreed with the judges that the dress did not fit well; Her look would have been great if she had focused on a few key areas and pulled back the others.

Group #2 (House of Matthews) had the most obvious connection. The tropical resort theme and palm tree prints were smart choices to tie everyone together.

Aside from Sasha Colby’s JLO-inspired bikini dress, the rest of the looks felt safe.

Sasha’s bikini was sensual and amazing; The fit seems to be tailored to her body. Pairing it with a flowy coat/jacket really upped the ante on the terrace, making it stand out from the rest of the outfit.

[In confessional] It’s my first day without sugar and I’m a little nervous. But I know you’re probably at home saying, “You better eat those women!” she said I will too. It may be a small spoon at a time, but I eat them.

Spice

On the other hand, Lozi’s jumpsuit, Malaysian babydoll Foxx’s pink mini dress and headpiece, and Marsha Marsha’s flowy tropical dress were all cute and straightforward. Each look was good to capture the theme of the group and the style of each queen.

Nothing too serious to steal the show. However, there’s nothing shocking about them below.

Spice Call - RuPaul's Drag Race Season 15 Episode 5

Group #3 (House of Visa) had another strong cohesive theme with gold, black and animal prints. However, while some queens came across as stylish, others looked a little sloppy.

Luxx Noir London simply stole the show! Her zebra-print pants and stunning violet trio top/cap/head piece come together for a stunning high-fashion ensemble. She screamed haute couture the second she hit the runway. If the outfit didn’t snag the win, her walk earned her one.

[In confessional] Baby, Sugar has left the building! My heart really goes out to Spice because now that they have broken up I feel like a part of Spice is missing.

Salina Aesthetics

Lady Isabelle Brooks wore another gorgeous dress that accentuated all her features and curves. And both Aura Mayari’s golden boss woman’s houndstooth and Spice’s zebra-striped dress reignited sexuality and style. All three went for Cruel and Fantastic, which they easily snatched away.

Amethyst’s golden dress wasn’t scary at all. The final dress came out well, and she looked great in it.

Although she would have been fine if she had made a few minor aesthetic changes, such as removing the gold lining on the body suit and shortening the length of the flowing fabric. And the gray animal sweater was totally throwaway. A few fine changes were all it took to push Amethyst forward.

But when it comes to Janelle Monae’s “QUEEN” lip-syncing, she’s out of luck.

Does anyone else agree that it was a close battle between her and Salina Estes? Both queens bring sass and sexiness to the center stage for this number. Both refused to leave and go home.

Where Salina pushed forward was in her energy and energy. Salina had a lot of losses when she first played below and wanted to impress. You can feel the energy she needs to stay and prove the judges wrong.

Amethyst also had energy, but since this was her third time below, she didn’t have the same fire as Salina. There was nothing stopping Salina from staying.

Final thoughts from the workshop:

  • The best reads come from Losey, but I’d love to know what other monkeys we missed!
  • Spice Aura had to own what she thought should be below. Based on Snatch Game’s performance, he wasn’t entirely wrong.
  • Queens still don’t know how to sew when they go to a drag race?! Queens make the same mistake every year. It’s confusing!
