Rental cars are expensive now. According to AAA, rental car prices are up about $40 per day compared to 2019 costs. In the year 2021 saw the worst car rental prices ever, rising 34% from this year. However, costs are still high. Knowing which cities have the highest rental car costs can help some travelers consider alternative transportation options when they arrive. A recent study by CheapCarRental.net revealed the 10 most expensive US cities to rent a car.
Why are costs so high?
As Covid became a shared reality, rental car companies sold off much of their inventory to cut costs. No one traveled, so it made sense for them to avoid unnecessary maintenance costs. However, another consequence of Covid was waiting around the corner in the form of a global microchip shortage, which led to the production of new cars. So the rental car companies couldn’t fill their inventory because there were no cars to buy. Finally, what this means for travelers is that costs have increased significantly compared to 2019 levels.
The study
The study looked at car rental prices at the top 100 U.S. airports in August. Compare the average weekly price for a cheap car between August 1St and August 31stSt Conducted to find the most expensive cities for car rental. Finally, the study only considered rental car companies that were located at the airport or at the airport’s car rental center.

1) Anchorage, Alaska (ANC) – $949 average weekly rate
2) Spokane, Washington (GEG) – $765 average weekly rate
3) Portland, Maine (PWM) – $737 average weekly rate
4) Little Rock, Arkansas (Lit) – $627 Avg. weekly level
5) Fayetteville, Arkansas (XNA) – $626 on average. weekly level
6) Charleston, South Carolina (CHS) – $616 average weekly rate
7) Lihue, Hawaii (LIH) – $607 Avg. weekly level
8) Albany, New York (ALB) – $576 average weekly rate
9) Des Moines, Iowa (DSM) – $573 average weekly rate
10) Minneapolis, Minnesota (MSP) – $571 average weekly rate
How can travelers save?
The most important way to save on a rental car is to avoid getting one. Let’s say your destination has good public transportation or is walkable. In that case, it might be worth relying on the occasional cab or Uber to save some serious cash. While renting a car gives you more flexibility and freedom when traveling, you may find that renting a car is not convenient for certain destinations.
Another tip to save on rent is to book early and avoid booking directly at the airport. While this study only looked at prices at airport car rental centers, it’s still a good indicator of local prices. However, you may be able to save some money by taking Uber to a car rental service outside the airport.
One final tip that doesn’t apply to all travelers is to take advantage of your credit card benefits. Many credit cards offer rental car insurance coverage as a cardholder benefit. Travelers should check with their credit card companies and make sure they fully understand the benefits before deciding to waive coverage provided by the rental company. However, this can be a good way to reduce the costs of renting a vehicle.
Do a thorough inspection
According to a recent survey, only 43% of customers do not list the damage they see on the vehicle during the initial damage inspection. Even if this is not their fault, it can lead to damage caused by the customer. Unfortunately, this can mean anything from fines to legal action. Be sure to inspect the vehicle thoroughly before leaving. Take photos, videos and document everything. When you return the vehicle, it’s unfortunate that you’re trying to save money on claims that weren’t your fault.
