Reykjavik in Iceland is one of the places I’ve been to in the world and I thought to myself – I could live here! It’s hands-down because of how amazing the city is, but how close it is. This is especially true of all the best things to do in Reykjavík and places to eat in the city.
Not only does Reykjavík have a lot to offer in terms of things to see and do, it’s also one of the safest cities in Europe. This makes Reykjavík a great hub to stay and even explore the best places in Iceland.
Long story short, you must visit Reykjavik. So, to make your trip a whole lot easier, we want to share with you some of the best things to do in Reykjavík when you visit.
1.) Explore Perlan Iceland
This can be a great place to start your trip to Iceland as this interactive museum covers a lot of what makes Iceland special.
Be sure to book these tickets and get a taste of what Iceland has to offer.
Even if you’re looking for the best things to do here in Reykjavik, there’s a good chance you’ll want to get out of the city to see more of Iceland, and this museum really helps set the context. For the one who says it’s going to happen to you.

I know that visiting the conference center doesn’t sound like one of the best things to do in Reykjavík or any other city, but I promise it’s worth it even if you only visit for a short time.
See this building is an architectural gem and is hard to miss when in Reykjavík.
The best way to visit, though, is definitely to attend a concert there so you have an excuse to dress up in the city’s best (you don’t do that as much anywhere else in Iceland because reasonably comfortable gear is very important here) and check out the Harpa Reykjavík Concert Hall and Convention Center in full.

3.) Take a trip to Hallgrimskirkja church
Even if you’ve never visited Iceland before, there’s a chance you’ll see this church…and if you haven’t, here it is.
Hallgrimskirkja is the tallest church in Iceland and as such is one of the best views in Reykjavík for those who can climb to the top.
You can see the mountains and the sea directly from Reykjavík. The interior is also amazing to look at as there are not many churches like it in the world.

4.) Visit the National Museum of Iceland
Thanks to Iceland’s incredible natural wonders, you’ll spend most of your time outdoors in the land of fire and ice. This probably includes some active adventures to begin with!
So, if you need some downtime between adventures, the National Museum of Iceland is one of the best things to do in Reykjavík.
So what is the National Museum of Iceland all about? Well, it basically covers the history of Iceland for the last 1,200 years.
Of particular interest is the Valþjófsstaður Gate, an ancient church gate dating back to the 1200s.

5.) See the Aurora Reykjavik light works
The Northern Lights are one of the main reasons to visit Iceland if you’ve never seen them before, let me just say – they deserve the hype!
It’s very real to experience and takes a while to get your head around for a reason. Again, knowing this information helps make the experience amazing so one of the best things to do in Reykjavík is to go to Aurora Reykjavík before you go to see them.
At Aurora Reykjavík you can preview what the northern lights look like and learn more about this natural phenomenon.
Also, since you can’t normally see them in Reykjavík (it’s so bright you have to drive a bit outside the city to see them), this is the only way to experience them in the city.

Greenland, which is very cold and almost certainly snowy, was named that way to attract people to live there.

7.) Take a photo with the Sun Voyager statue
Okay, so this is more of a toybox exercise since there isn’t much to do here. But hear me out!
The Sun Voyager monument is a Reykjavík icon so you should see it when you’re walking around the city – especially on the way to Bejarins Béztu Pilsúr or Reykjavík’s famous dog park.
Seriously, getting a hot dog here is the whole thing and you should do it.

8.) Visit Arbaer open air museum
If you don’t tire of museums, another great place to visit in Reykjavík is the Arbor Open Air Museum, which takes you back to ancient Iceland.
All complete with twenty cute little Icelandic houses.
Once (and) filled with photos of traditional Icelandic houses, you can learn more about what it was like to live in Iceland many years ago. It’s a great way to get into the history of living in Iceland.
Oh, and don’t forget to book this airport transfer to and from Reykjavík and Keflavík airports. It is the cheapest and easiest option that drops you through the terminal entrance.
9.) Find family fun at Laugardalslaug
Laugardalslaug is the biggest pool in town and is generally great fun for everyone!
There’s plenty to do there, we’re talking water slides, hot tubs, steam rooms and even mini golf. Taking the time to relax and soothe any sore muscles you may have from all of Iceland’s active exploration is definitely worth it.
Visiting Laugardalslaug is one of the best things to do in Reykjavik when you first arrive or before you leave Iceland for home.
10.) Visit Sky Lagoon
If you do not want to book this entry to Blue Lagoon, with transfers included, then book these tickets to Sky Lagoon.
It is one of the newest geothermal pools in Iceland and Reykjavík. Be sure to book these tickets to include the 7-step spa system and take some time to enjoy the sunset views. It’s a beautiful place to practice.
