While the idea of traveling in a “pandemic pad” may be on the way out, other pandemic-inspired travel trends are here to stay. That includes finding a hotel or resort with plenty of outdoor space for seasonal activities and sports, and finding a place where one can work and enjoy an extended stay at the same time.

Many large resorts in areas that experience dramatically different seasons during the year close for part of the year (ie ski resorts in the summer and beaches in the winter). But there are a growing number of all-inclusive resorts that offer new experiences and activities year-round to new and returning visitors.

For off-site entertainment, a vintage Land Rover Defender will transport 110 guests to Mount Wyndham, Wyndham Country Club and downtown Wyndham.

The newly opened Wilder Wyndham New York was designed to reflect and celebrate the local feel of the city of Wyndham, embracing the long summer days, changing colors of fall and ski season. (It’s also the perfect destination for anyone looking for a city that loves Christmas.)

With plenty of parking around the property, most guests arrive by car, but Hudson Station isn’t too far for those wanting to take the Amtrak from New York City or Boston, for example. (Note, however, that Uber is scarce and so are taxis, so arrange car service with the hotel in advance. The hotel has a refurbished Land Rover that it uses to transport guests to Windham Mountain during ski season.)

Wilder Wyndham offers over 4,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space.

The property hosts seven different accommodation experiences on a 20-acre property, with a total of 111 suites. One of these suites has a guest suite, full kitchen, living room, washer and dryer, and four bedrooms that sleep eight people.

And while the other 110 suites can only be booked directly through Wilder Wyndham, the “Farmhouse,” as it’s named, is also available for rent through Airbnb. And better than most Airbnb rentals, guests aren’t on the hook for cleaning before they leave because it’s the best of both worlds: with all the amenities in your own property, but also hotel services and amenities.

Among those other amenities are a full bar open daily for breakfast and lunch and a restaurant open for dinner and weekend brunch. For spring and summer visitors, there’s a spacious outdoor lawn complete with hammocks, tree swings, fire pits, lawn games, an oversized in-ground heated pool and live entertainment. (The hotel is very dog-friendly, and there is a dog run on the property for the most important guests to get some exercise and play.)

Adjacent to the restaurant, guests will find Bubbles Bakery serving its signature strawberry rhubarb pie, soft serve ice cream, homemade croissants and fresh coffee.

And in the winter, several private saunas, barrel-shaped and with views of Windham Mountain, tubing and snowshoeing, and new skating rinks open for the new year. The hotel is currently setting up a small cabin for skate rentals that will serve outdoor chocolates and hot toddies.

The site is family-friendly, but also great for couples and/or groups of friends traveling together, so this is the kind of resort where you can say there’s something for everyone.

Also critical for anyone looking to work remotely, the hotel has very strong and fast Wi-Fi included in the rooms, which is important since there is no wireless phone service in the immediate area.

In the year Founded in 1880, Thompson House Resort is family owned and operated for over 140 years until Wider Hotels became the owner in 2021.

And while the seven lodges themselves are historic and over 140 years old, everything inside has been renovated and brought up to date. All rooms have king or queen size beds with oak floors, custom furniture, marble bathrooms (some with claw foot sinks) and central heating/air conditioning units. Most suites have custom wood deck chairs and balconies with unobstructed views of Mount Windham or the Batavia Kill River.

The dog-friendly hotel offers 110 suites and king- and queen-bed rooms featuring oak floors, custom furniture and luxe bathrooms.

Since opening six months ago, the hotel has hosted numerous events, including weddings and several corporate retreats, the latter especially during the fall conference. For weddings, business meetings and other events, the ballroom has a maximum capacity of 200 (although 150 is a breather for tables, live music and the like).

Beneath the ballroom is a large rec room of similar size, completely renovated and equipped with a pool table, foosball table, video game machines and couches in front of large HDTVs. The space is now open to guests, and the hotel already hosts some events for guests there, such as movie nights. It can also be used as an after-party for weddings, and the management hopes to eventually add a popcorn machine and bar and other amenities in the future.

At Babels, visitors and locals alike are welcome, serving comfort classics for brunch and dinner.

Also available for wedding parties (or anyone looking for a weekend getaway) is the Baller Suite, a two-bedroom suite in the main lodge directly above the lobby and away from the ballroom. With lots of space, lots of natural light, views of the creek, two spacious balconies and a full bath with a clawfoot tub, the Baller Suite makes for an ideal bridal suite even before the big event.

After a day of playful adventure, guests can relax in the oversized heated pool and soak in the views of Windham Mountain.

Starting rates for guest rooms and suites range from $172 to $215, depending on availability and size. Baller Suite rates start at $675 per night, and the Farm House starts at $1,200 per night.
