If you’ve been to Nashville recently, you’ve probably noticed how packed it is.
There’s a current trend of bachelors and their wedding parties flocking to Nashville for one last wild weekend before heading down the aisle — and they’re not the only ones with Nashville buzzing.
Music lovers and travelers looking for that Southern charm won’t find it in Nashville.
The real soul of Tennessee is in Memphis. – House of Blues.
First impressions
I didn’t know anything about Memphis when I was offered a chance to visit recently.
It exceeded all my expectations.
This was my first time truly experiencing Southern hospitality, and it was refreshing.
There is so much to experience and explore in Memphis and I didn’t get to do everything I wanted to do in my short time there, but now I’m going back!

Expected from the beginning
My room at the Hyatt Centric Bell Street Memphis had an amazing view of the city that made me excited to explore more of what Memphis has to offer.
For a more spectacular view, Hyatt Centric has a spectacular view of the Beck & Call Rooftop Whiskey Bar, where you can see the famous “M Bridge” light show that spans the Mississippi River to Arkansas.
The rooftop offers views of the Memphis Pyramid, downtown Memphis and more.
Exit to Memphis
If you want incredible live music, head to Beale Street and grab food and drinks at the awesome B.B. King Blues Club or try the many other popular spots up and down the street.
Ball Street is filled with blues, soul, rock-n-roll and jazz music every night. The heart of Bay Street is a five-minute walk from Hyatt Centric.
Some of the world’s best barbecue is across the street at Charles Vergo’s Rendezvous Barbecue Restaurant. Not only were the barbecue ribs and biscuits incredible, but the food was brought to the table quickly.

In the footsteps of the king
The city of Memphis is full of famous places where Elvis used to hang out.
The playhouse was one of his favorite restaurants and it is said that they put him at the back door of the restaurant so that he would not go there and gather the crowd and he could easily find his favorite booth.
Elvis fans came from all over the world to sit in his booth and enjoy his favorite sandwich – a toasted peanut butter and banana sandwich with mayonnaise.
If you’re like me, that sandwich combination doesn’t sound remotely appealing, but I’m surprised it tastes better than it does (I know, I know… But try it!).
Iconic music moments
For music lovers, Memphis has a history of famous R&B and blues musicians around every corner.
Of course, just a short drive from downtown Memphis is the famous Graceland. The stunning former King of Rock and Roll’s home is visited daily by dedicated Elvis fans.
For an even more exciting experience, head to one of Memphis’ favorite venues – Sun Studios, where music history is forever changed.
During the studio tour, you are taken to the recording room where Elvis and Johnny Cash were present.
It is also where the “Million Dollar Quartet” image of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins was taken.
Back in time
There’s more to Memphis than music. Some of the most important moments in history have taken place in the heart of Memphis.
The Civil Rights Museum offers an informative tour of the history of the Civil Rights Movement and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The museum is based out of the hotel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and has a poignant memorial to the civil rights leader.
Walking where he shared his last moments was a powerful and unforgettable experience.
Memphis has otherworldly experiences
In true Southern fashion, Memphis has an even more gruesome history filled with legends of ghosts and ghosts that can be seen on every corner of the city.
We took an amazing Ghost Tour where we walked the spooky city streets at night. The tour was full of drama, but sometimes there were chilling stories of Memphis residents who never left the city after they died.
This was a fun experience, but after the tour I suggest sleeping under the night light if you are a scaredy cat like me 😁.
To help you escape the innocence of the Ghost Tour, I highly recommend visiting the Old Dominick Distillery and learning how Tennessee whiskey is made.
The tour includes a tasting at the end, where you can try drinking my personal favourite, Old Dominick’s famous toddy – the new one!
Where to stay in Memphis
Speaking of the Old Dominick Distillery, Hyatt Centric Beale Street Memphis is just a short walk down the street and the perfect home base for exploring all Memphis has to offer.
The Hyatt Centric is in a perfect location with the amazing views I mentioned earlier. The room was very spacious and beautifully combined with a rustic modern Memphis vibe – and the bed was very comfortable!
There are so many amazing amenities on the property, but the best part about the Hyatt Centric Beale Street Memphis is the friendly staff who demonstrate what Southern hospitality is all about.
I can’t recommend this place enough for your next trip to Memphis!
